Can't add much....its an S and a premuim was/is paid for the greater HP and limited production #'s. Many would say myself included; why pay the premuim when you can chip and regular tt w/better HP results and the depreciation on that type of car may be greater in the future if the market doesn't want to pay the premuim.

I seriously considered acquiring this car about 10 months ago - to the point of having a PPI performed. There was a lot of things leaking / oozing once the engine cover was removed. I compiled the list of items needing attention and returned the car to broker who informed the owner. The owner actually had all the leak-items repaired at his cost.
The car had 32K+ miles on it.
The deal breaker for me was noticing that the rear fender (honestly, I don't remember if it was the left or right one) had been repainted - quite poorly, in fact. In the "right" light, the flawed paint job is VERY noticeable. I walked away.
Another individual bought the car - I understand it's back at the brokers because that buyer lost his job. I don't know how many miles are on it now.
Why was I considering a Turbo S? Because it is a piece of Porsche history (NOT because of the carbon fiber, NOT because of the additional hp, etc. etc.). The Turbo S limited production run was THE final air-cooled turbos to be produced. There were only 182 of these made.
I owned an '89 930 - the last of the 1980's vintage turbos and the only year with a five-speed tranny. Porsche history.
Owning a small piece of Porsche history was that important to me. Period.
I have since sold my '89 and continue enjoying my '97 993tt (still a piece of Porsche history as it is the last FULL production run of the air-cooled turbo).
If anyone wants more info on the S discussed above, feel free to contact me.

I have also test driven this car in 2003 when it had only 28,000+ miles. The car was at Cal Motorsports in Sunnyvale, CA as well. The owner was a doctor who lives in Viperbob's neck of the wood.
It drove beautifully. One thing I noticed was that on initial start up/warm up, the driver's side exhaust spewed a lot of white smoke (driver's side only). Sandy, a very nice sales person, explained that the flat six engine does have white smoke issues sometimes. However, it continues to spew white smoke for some 15 minutes, and I could hear a light valve-ticking sound. Now that I know more about Porsches (mostly from this board and Viperbob), and reading what Dan wrote here, I can see how the car could have leak issues.
The owner was asking $108,900, non-negotiable, then, and I passed. Luckily, a few months later, I found my RUF.
The 993 Turbo S is certainly a great machine. The thing is high miles will destroy the value of the S. I drive my cars, A LOT, thus it's not really a good fit for my use pattern.
If you are interested in the car, your best move is to have Viperbob check it out for you. He will steer you in the right way.

If anyone's seriously interested and wants pics or an unbiased lookover I'll be down there again later this week to pick up the cheapie RS America these guys posted at the same time. I noticed this car, but didn't pay much attention other than a cursory inquiry, and showing my wife that I could scrounge up 5 RSA's or this TT. (Admitedly I'm only concerned with its utility as another race car, but it's still straight and clean.)

Here is the problem with an S. Its a collectors car right? High miles devalue it. I cant out of my car!! I go to the gorcery store, I go to Home Depot, I take my wife out to see the desert sunset, I take the dog out to chase lizards at 124mph!! So I could NOT buy a car and then let it sit. Although now that its getting hot I wont drive it over 90 degrees so it will be in the garage unless its nite time. I would love an S but I would love to be able to afford one and have my 'regular Turbo' to drive.

PCNA generated a letter stating that 176 97 S cars were imported rather than 182. I have a copy of the letter but no idea how they arrived at that figure. I have an archive request pending now for more information on 182 or 176.
I have stated before from owning both that I can feel no difference from a stock turbo to an S. The extra money buys you some carbon and history. Not a performance increase, if your main concern is performance the best value by far is a standard 993 turbo. In my opinion.
