Default Hot Shutdowns, PorschePHD & Viperbob

Well, we are going to have some fun with this. I am posting a picture of 4 leaking turbochargers turbine wheels. I actually have grouped into the mix Viperbob's K24 turbine wheel and Porsche PHD K24 turbine wheel. There are 2 other K16 wheels that have been in repair as smokers...

The top wheel is by far the worst, the 2nd wheel isn't bad but it pounded the thrust out... The 3rd on is so, so and the 4th one has only 2,500 miles on it, and you can see the heat transfer.

So, with Viperbob tearing up the race tracks, which shaft is his?

With PorschePHD doing over 62 dyno runs and 600HP, which shaft is his?

The other two swore to me that they cool down there turbo's....

This is all for fun and lessons learned..

My guess is that the top 2 were the smokers.

The top two smokers - due to darkened part of shaft at the thickest point right behind the turbine wheel. The other two are clean at the thickest part of shaft. Oil forced out past the seal hitting turbine making smoke and darkening this part of shaft.

So first two are the smokers.

Kevin - On the thickest part of shaft there is a grove. Is this where the sealing ring is?

The 4th turbo has heat right up to this point and the 3rd is clean. This is interesting as the 4th is only 2500mls.

My guess then is 4th is PorschePHD and 3rd is Bobs. Because the oil pressure/heat is being forced right up to the sealing ring ... having 600hp and chasing more HP on the dynos maybe - more pressure put on the seals???

P.S. Fun game Kevin .... we should do more of this type of thing!!!!

In all fairness, I have cleaned the sealing ring gaps on the 3rd and 4th shafts.. You have to have it clean to mike the gaps.. There is a oil slinger grove, then the larger gap on the thicker portion is the sealing ring area..

Daniel, I enjoy this board, and will post a header Do it yourself MOD to benifit all of you guys...

Well mine had more than 2500 miles on it so #4 is not mine. My turbos were not smoked so I would say #3 is mine. #1 looks REALLY bad so I would say that is the K16 as I can not see that as being Stephen's. With so much HP, I would have thought #2 was Stephen's as I would assume he would take care of his turbos but could pound out the thrust bearing. I know Stephen drives his car a lot so I do not think #4 is his.

So I still have:

1. K16
2. stephen
3. bob
4. K16

LMAO...I KNOW I KNOW. Mine are the unburned ones. LOL, practice what I preach. BTW it is 78 Dynos and many many high boost runs. Always cool off and change the oil on a regular schedule, more is better!! Try 3K oil changes on Mobile 1 Funny, because I told Kevin he should get a good laugh out of mine. I figured the shafts would be burned to heck. The thrust, well what can you do?
