I should probably start another thread, but Stephen Kaspar & I are in the process of making a DVD/Video about a DIY turbo removal/installation... How many are in, and would like to see it come to pass...

Was just speaking with a friend today about this. He's contemplating removing the turbos on his 97TT himself to send away. He was giong to ask the forums about should he try it ... how hard ... how long etc.

A video/DVD/Mgep would be an excellent idea IMOP.

The real issue is how to reach and release some of the bolts, if you do not have the right tools, or the car lifted at eye level.

With the engine out I have removed last week both my K24s from the engine in about 60 minutes, first time I put my hands on an engine. Guess to whom those turbos are going what the heck Kevin is only 10k miles away.

Here is a pic that shows the bracket around the turbo and the hoses. Reaching one of the bolts attaching to the headers was a PITA. These bolts are usually rusted. Use a lot of WD40!

Dan,

It took me 7 hrs to remove the turbos. - Hey I am an architect, not a mechanic , gimme a break !
The reality was, I stopped and took photos of the entire process - and that was quite time consuming.

If your friend has a hoist, and a decent set of tools - I believe 5 hrs is realistic for a first timer.
There was nothing complicated involved in the removal [ refer to "Hey I am an architect " comment ]

Here is a thread that I posted at the time.

The new Rennlist format saw the photo links corupted.
Do a cut and past on the url's and the pics will still work....

Well I have been off for a few days, after I posted the first reply I cant believe the # of responses. As discussed my car runs fantastic, and should be quicker than cars with k24's because it makes great boost early. I have some tire spin because I may have a bad viscous coupler. Just checked and they are $ 750 from the dealer, going to get one here soon. I did all the removal and installation myself, this is where Kevin is a great help also. He gave me all the part numbers for new fastners, washers etc. The install takes about 4 hours taking your time, most of it is getting the exhaust and rear of the car back on. I have a partner that has a 1996tt just like mine, with k24, large intercooler, and boost turned up. We are going to the drag stipp here soon and have track events planned, this will be a good test for Kevins turbo;s. After this I will post again and let you know how they compare, right now all I have with the butt dyno, and it feels good.

I've been drooling over the stage 2 turbos, with zero-clearance. What about the "waste-gate" modification? Are you doing that as well? I'm dying anxious to hear your report. My problem is, with 62,500 miles, my car doesn't smoke even the tiniest bit. Gadzooks... how long am I supposed to wait?

Kevin,

I would definitely be interested in the DIY DVD. Regarding the core/heat exchanger thank you.

Thanks for sharing so much great information.
