Default "S" oil-cooler and Andial boost gauge installed

Yes, Mr. Cheapskate found a good deal on a used "S" cooler (another Rennlister stepped up to the Cargraphics, or "big bertha" cooler), and yet another Rennlister donated an Andial boost gauge. I had them both installed by Michael Schatz yesterday. He wasn't able to get the illumination connected, so he'll do that later in the week. Meantime, I've only driven the car at night, so I can't see the boost gauge, and of course the weather was cool, so I couldn't see much temperature action. But, these two minor changes give me a good feeling, and I'll report back with any interesting data.

I'm starting to run out of excuses for *not* taking my car to the track.

Oldguy,

Patience, little grasshopper, and the mods will come to you when the time is ripe. Do not press the master on his plans for future upgrades, as his wife may be reading this thread. But... ahhhh.... if my stock turbos were to fail, there may be a possible upgrade in there somewhere. And really... how long can a stock clutch possibly last, when Viperbob is taunting me with his LWF/ clutch upgrade?

Jeff,

Tempting, tempting. Why are you doing this to me? I have sworn off running track events (really, I mean it this time).

Here's a picture of the Andial gauge that replaces the left side A/C vent. It still will pass a little air, but what the heck, only a wussie uses A/C, right?

Question I don't get it

Steve, I must be dense. I don't get it.

Seems that boost gauge takes something important (the A/C vent) and replaces it with something that is duplicative of something already installed in the car, and installed in a much better location. If your left hand is on the steering wheel at 10 O'Clock, your (at least mine) arm partially or totally blocks seeing that guage. When in boost, you need your eyes on the road, as things are happening fast, so that's a long way to look down and to the side, and around your arm at that.

My guess is if the factory put a boost gauge there, people would be rushing to tear it out and turn it into something useful like an A/C vent.

Please tell me, what am I missing?

BTW, this is not meant to be at all critical or judgmental; I'm just puzzled. Your friend, Lee.

Lee,

You'd be absolutely correct... if the digital boost gauge actually measured boost. What it displays is a computed approximation of boost by reading other sensors. And... it can't display anything above .8 bar. A real boost gauge is far more accurate, and will show those instananeous readings that go well over 1 bar. To my mind, this is an important diagnostic tool. But you are correct... it is inconveniently located for constant monitoring. Plus it probably reduces the vent effectiveness to 30%... so that air comes out the other vents. To my mind, no big deal. Others, in warmer climates (eg oldguy) may not to make that compromise. I'm happy to give up that little bit of air to see my actual boost pressure.

Okay Steve, makes sense. I didn't know the boost gauge didn't read boost, but estimated it from other sensors. Hmmmmmmmm. Seems a little misleading. I hope my clock is really telling time.

Lee Actually your clock is approximating time by reading
some silicon pendulm sensors that measure earth rotational
spin. Those gyroscopic sensors sense earth rate in a Schuler
approximation using Kalman filters. Since time is always instantaneous
and not continuous there is no way for your clock to tell you time,
it can only give you an instataneous aproxaimation of what time
it thought it was at that instant, which is always behind.

Paul, so I guess if I do lot's of mods to the car to get it well over 500hp, the added speed will help me get closer to the correct time. I'm beginning to understand the benefit of the slippery slope.

"Engineers shouldn't attempt humorous posts!"

Or... they should provide a "geek-to-English" translation.
