Actually you can blow one of these engines on an up shift even with a rev limiter. If you’re under full boost and miss an up shift the rev limiter does not stop the motor’s inertia from carrying the revs well beyond that point and getting valve float, hence bent valves. I’ve seen it happen before.

At what RPM does the rev limiter kicks?

Todd:

A flat six IS inherently perfectly balanced as both primary and secondary forces are cancelled very effectively by that layout and firing order.

Victor - very good advice there.

J.Seven - the factory rev limiter is set around 7100 I believe - plus or minus 100. Someone here can post the exact numbers if they want to check their manual.

911/Q45 - is that straight from the owner's manual? I thought it was higher. I know on my 930 it is over 7000.

I was pretty sure it was 6,600/6,700RPM but I didnt want to say anything until I confirmed it.. I am sure 911/Q45 is correct.

Yep - you guys are right - 6720 right from the manual. I was mixing it up with my 930 which is 7000 +/- 200, also right from the manual. That explains why I have hit the limiter on my 993TT but never have hit it on the 930.

No wonder you blew it up
500 miles on engine, not even broken in. Tracking it and overrevving.
Poor engine :-\
Oh well, at least it was driven, but a little early.
