Kevin

We were unable to sustantiate your theory on the dyno given our cam timing and tuning. The K-24s hit the wall at 524 hp the Gt 1's pulled to 571 with the same tuning. What am I missing.

Street GT1 turbos use K16 cold side, K24 hot side impellers. So, in theory you would get the same flow as a K24 but it would spool quicker just as Kevin said. Having said that, who knows what compressor wheels and maps the turbos you tested had.

I dont think Street GT1 turbos would provide enough flow for your 3.8L motor . You would probably need to have a K24 cold/hot side combination to make good power.

Who built the turbos that you tested on the dyno?

Sometimes just because someone says GT1 turbos it doesnt mean the compressor wheels, clip angles, maps, etc are all the same from one builder to the next.

VRus;

It is the other way around. True GT1 Streets use the K16 turbine wheel, and use the K24 compressor wheel (cold side). The higher HP is a result of the overspeed situation that is happening. Folk that have read all of my posts in the past draws mention that I prefer the K16 turbine side for this reason..... The hybrid turbochargers that use the K16 turbine side have better overall results. Steve Weiner has had very good dyno results when using the GT1's. With the 3.8ltr larger volume, the K16's turbine side is really winding up.... The rotational speed of the turbine wheel is maintaining the airflow. The boost pressures on the GT1 do not exceed the K24's. Like I've said they make it quicker, and keep it there..

JJayB;

I can guess what the HP chart looks like. I bet the K16's GT1, outpulled the K24's by 400 RPM maybe more with the 3.8ltr. It reached the HP mark sooner, didn't it? On Sharkey's car we can sustain 1.5 bar and it has hit 28psi on top end pulls... When I got my hands on the car it was immediately dialed down!

This is incorrect! The Street GT1's flow an equal amount of air as the K24's. But, as you will find out, they will spool quicker, and thus produce more air at a given RPM sooner......
I agree here with Kevin. The way it's set up, another real advantage is the quicker spool. By the time K24 based turbos spool, my car is usually long gone

It turns the car into the "most usuable high HP car" as someone in the know said at the recent event Having lag on the track is something I really saw hurt other car's overall performance on a track this weekend.

Hey... I've seen that trailer. Wait, it's mine.....

The rest of the stuff doesn't matter as Kevin is going to sprinkle my turbos with the magic dust and I'll be running in the low 10's

BTW Alex, we'll see what I can do with my little K24s and 500 lbs less than the Monkeytronic. Be careful with your reply. Rememeber I still have your car in my front yard, along with yards and yards of carbon fiber products....

Hey there!!!

Yes indeed Bob IS the man. He was so kind and really delivered us in style (and even had a gun pointed at him!!!) and really helped out so so much. Most of you guys in the Bay Area already know him but for those that don't he's a top guy and a real gent. His expertise was MUCH appreciated!

PS After that magic dust you'll almost be lifting like this:

Kevin,

Thanks for that correction.. I actually had it correct in my head but it came out reversed when I typed it.

Can you give me some info on these zero clearance turbos with the titanium impellers that I keep hearing about??

I am on the hunt for another 993TT and will be looking to do the motor.. Any info would be appreciated.

Victor, I noticed you're from Ontario... who does work on your cars if you don't mind me asking? Is it Jay Lloyds or Al Soloroli?

Kevin, Turbos are stock street GT1's. Andial says its the 3.8 displacement that lights them up which goes along with Kevins theory. HP was over 500 rpms sooner, which explains why I'm having to shift into 6th on the front straight at Willow Springs.(not complaining)

Other than the tip what launch techniques did Cort or the other drivers use in the shootout. Curious if it was 5000 rpm drop the clutch. I have a match race with a 427 Thunderbolt who thinks hes going to eat me alive and I may have to get more agressive on my launch.

Hi Randy,

Yup.. I am a friend of Al's.. He works on all my Porsches. His red 993 TT used belong to me.

I recently sold my 96 TT and am looking for another one now. Were you the one that was in the red car with him when he raced the Hayabusa motorcycle?

no, that was my friend Pierre Tien (Arena Red S/C 993 Cab). I heard all about it. I got the opportunity to witness his (your) red beast first hand via shotgun, truely amazing acceleration... but do you really think it's pushing the numbers he claims?

James Fyn from Altra Performance is reassembling my '96 GT2 as-we-speak. I also upgraded to an Andial 3.8L kit and learned quite a bit from this thread. Hope to meet you someday.

p.s. I recall your Polar Silver car in Al's shop last winter. It was for sale and i was really thinking about it. LOL.

JJayB,

Thanks for posting your acceleration times! It's great to see the performance, reliability and durability that can be realized with the 993TT platform.

Were you running 91 or 100 at the time? Also, what MPH are you hitting into turn 1 at Willow?

Looking forward to comparing our cars again!

I'm not sure what Cort did- other than he tried various things for each cars since he had four goes at them. I know he dumped the clutch a few times from 5.5-6k!! There was no slipping A couple of times he really nailed it.
As far as the tip goes I did my own launches, which require a buncha goofy stuff in order to get right.
