Will an oil extractor work well on a 993?
I do my own oil changes on my cars.
Granted, the filters still needed to be changed, but I was thinking about this to help avoid the mess.
With the engine/oil tank reservoir, would I still be able to get 90%+ of the oil out through the filler tube in the engine compartment?

I don not see any reason why not however:
The oil in the engine case can not be extracted directly as the dip stick leads to the oil tank.
However if one is comfortable leaving the quart or so of oil in the case to mix with the one or two quarts of oil not refreshed in the oil cooler lines when refilling the oil tank there should be no issue.
The refill will require a bit less oil, maybe 8 quarts or so.
The other drawback may be the oil extractor's capacity may be less than the oil present so it will need to be drained out into a jug twice during the process.
Also by using an extractor one is forgoing examining the drain plug for diagnostic reasons.
The net result will be a little more old oil will be mixing with the new at each oil change. For most the net effect on lubrication is probably nill.

You might be able to get most of the oil out from the tank but would run the risk of knocking the oil level sensor out of calibration. IMHO, by the time you go to the trouble of changing out the filters, the time you'd save by using an oil extractor wouldn't be worth it. You'd still have old oil in the sump that the extractor can't access.

i have one and use it as Chao does. I also use it for power steering fluid removal on other vehicles, just to site another use. I see the attraction of trying to avoid the Valdez spill potential, I've had pretty good luck using the "form a funnel" along with a 5 gallon bucket with draining the oil tank.
