I remember that article on the VW Golf with the 928 engine -- as I recall, they had to widen the entire golf chassis to shoehorn it in. 'wolf in sheep's clothing' was the article title I think.

I like the idea of NO logo. The MB and BMWs around here are usually the flashy ones, but sometimes there are the ones with NO badges, and logically, they are the faster ones. Nothing to prove.

Good one protokultur! I enjoyed that.

I've driven both the Cooper Works and the Mini S. I really liked the Works car but the premium might make me go for the S because it was a bunch of fun also. I'm 6'4" and was able to fit in the Mini. Just.

Johnt53:

"Anyway, as I recall, they said that removing the badges or understating the model was prevalent in Europe because execs who got expensive cars as perks drew heat from lower-paid employees, and often the employees took out their wrath on the vehicle--so the execs disguised the cars as lower-priced models. Maybe some of our European rennlisters can confirm or refute this."

That's true, but they usually just remove the badge. Another interesting practice is the various ranks of hierachy are prescribed their choice of company car based on litreage. e.g. The Prez obviously gets the most. Vice-Presidents usually are limited to 2.8, etc.

I saw a Cab 996 with a GT3 badge on the back and knew it was a standard 996 Cab. My wife and I were walking and I said what a moron. She said "Why! its a Porsche" and I explained to her that it was not a GT3 and she goes "Ricer in a Porsche" Yep. lol

I have a friend with an SC that has a whale tail. He custom made a badge in the classic script.

"Kein Turbo"

It's german for "no turbo!"

My college roomie had a beat up Capri and rearranged the badge to :

Crapi

Later, he spraypainted Turbo and the final mod was he cut the roof off the car. It ultimately became the infamous:

Turbo Crapi Cabriolet

The car had an unfortunate end to many years of fun...RIP...

I was walking by a shabby E36 3-series with an M3 badge on it and saw the person getting into it. I asked something along the lines of "Is that an M3?". With pride he replied it was, and informed me it was very fast. I told him I was curious because it looked different than mine - pointing out a few of the clues. I remarked I wasn't aware of the different configurtions that were available, to ease any feeling that I was accusing otherwise (ha ha). He then told me it was his brothers but he got to drive it often.

I asked if he would pop the hood so we could see the engine and sure enough .............. the 318i four-banger resided.

I gotta weigh in, to check on the children. My first in 1958, a 1952 Porsche Club car Speedster (1100cc VW eng)

On sleepers: I was at a social function in Norcal with old motorheads. Their were a few guys looking in the front compartment of a gray dusty 4 door Corvair. I wandered over and saw a Ferrari engine. It was extremely roadworthy, the suspension was all a one off. The guy was in his mid 70's and still drove it. He did the conversion himself about the time Bill Harrah did the Jeeperrari. Awesome. He told some good stories about Ricers and Big cubers at lights.

Lightbulb reminds me of...

the nyc fleamarkets & stands where you can buy a handbag for $20 & choose a logo: gucci - prada - or fendi. ha. ha. -----even heard of women sewing smaller waist measurement tags onto their levi 501's!!!!!

who cares.... those idiots are only fooling themselves.

also, re: logo removal... guys in cali would remove a 525i logo in hopes people would think they were driving the more expensive 545 etc... this is totally... sad.

so sad i can't believe i'm even giving it thought...

come to think of it.... maybe i should remove the 959 badge i put on the boxster?

nahhhh.
