Default RS Shifter -Stock Replacement-

Need some advice / input 1996 C4S. So my Coupler is shot (forward the transaxle) as my shifter once engaged into Reverse only is popping out when engaged and release the clutch to back up. My mechanic verified this as the issue. He is recommending I replace the whole shifter with the RS Shifter. He said it will eliminate the issue going forward and is $300 part vs Coupler $460 part. Thoughts / benefits? Thanks guys.

Do it! I've got the RS shifter installed and love it.

Looking at the PET, I don't see something called a "coupler". Might post the part number(s) you are referring to which would clarify exactly which parts get replaced.

According to the PET, the only parts that are different on the RS are the "lever", "fork" and the "gear shift rod". (and the shift ****)

yea not sure he didn't supply me the part numbers. Originally he said the Coupler "coupling" (forward the transaxle) and replace both pins on the Stock Set up then recommended replacing with the RS Shifter and said that would solve the problem? Not sure here.... reason why I am asking. Thanks

Shifter issues aside...You have, by far, the best avatar.

I am assuming he is talking about the rubber piece(Item 30 Below) that is eliminated with when the Golden Rod is installed. I went with the FD linkage and have been very happy.

Yep! That is exactly it! What is the difference with the FD linkage vs the Golden Rod?

The FD linkage, AKA Golden Rod, replaces part # 12 in the diagram...I believe.

^GBOS1. The FD linkage is the Golden Rod. Its a copy of #12(RS linkage) in the diagram. Call Darin at FD and he'll hook you up! Tons of info on the board about it.

Guys,
Seems that replacing any soft parts such as the nylon ball cup or the rubber shift coupler would only come up to a few dollars. Are you suggesting that the "popping out" is the result of too much play in the 20-year-old soft parts causing the shifter to not be able to fully insert the transmission into a gear so it pops out? To be clear $300 to upgrade the shifter can be appealing but replacing the soft parts will cost a lot less than this.

My mechanic called to order "Coupler" forward the transaxle #30 in the Diagram above and the part was $460! I know my guy well and is very well respected in the Porsche Dept. that's what he said.

Dont!!!!!! The coupler is the same rubber piece that failed already. Yes it's new, but getting the FDM GR is a no brainer. I made my own, otherwise, I'd have the GR.

Don't worry I am going with the Golden Rod I already told him to.
