Default Cleaning Aluminum Cases

I have an old transmission that I am about to rebuild and the aluminum case is heavily oxidized. Is there something on the market to bring the case back to its original brightness? I could do it mechanically, but it would be a lot of effort. Just hoping for some chemical process that others have tried that works.

TIA

Interesting question - I wonder if a regular metal polish would work?

Ernie,

Strip it all down, plug the bearing holes and have the case and covers tumbled.

Thanks,
Dave

I read the OP wrong. Dave's suggestion is a good one.

My first thought was a scotchbrite flap wheel (for cleaning something up) , but with all the nooks and crannies would be a PITA.

Have them media blasted; soda, plastic bead...

Ultrasonic Cleaning, around here an engine case or transmission case can be cleaned for about $60...

I second Trophy's ideas. If youre already going to disassemble and have something media-blasted, try ultrasonic first. Its a lot more forgiving and passive, especially for parts that are thin or have critical dimensions (not super important for a tranny case).

The absolute best cleaning for aluminum is Vapor blasting. Google one in your area.

If you want to do it yourself and it would take all month is this stuff I found works the best https://www.griotsgarage.com/product...etal+polish.do

This is what I used on my 993, quick easy and looks great but it has to be this paint. Hi-Temp Harley Case paint. I will restore vintage motorcycles for myself. Aluminum is a bitch. If you want show Vapor blast, if not paint the cases.
