Hrrrmmmmm.....I understand what's great about the P-car but I enjoyed the process of getting the car up to snuff in every way so much that now that it's a perfect driving car I find myself looking elsewhere. Not that the Miata would require any fettling. I started building and R2 for my tinkering needs!
Is it just the photos (or me) or does the rear wheels of that Mazda just look awkward? I agree, the next Miata has nice lines, needs to be lowered a few inches and it would be much better. Different experience than a 993 for sure so definitely ponder your decision, and don't forget to remember that depreciation curve!
Nice looking car. It may be just me, but kind of reminds me of an Opel GT, especially the first two pics.
Happy New Year to all of you and your families and wish you all good health.
Yes! My thoughts exactly. From some angles this car looks good. From others, less so ... much like the Opel. Aesthetically, it would benefit from a change to wheels and ride height.
With the coupe (RF) body style addition to the long standing Miata MX-5 convertible, what's the MX-5 coupe's market competition? Is that the Subaru BRZ coupe and development cousin/model Toyota?
As for the Mazda/Subaru declared recipe of modest specific output vs weight, .. hasn't the aftermarket filled the void with Bolt-On super chargers and/or turbo charger up grades? Not to worry; There's always the western Colorado tuning shop Flyin' Miata's. Here is a link: www.flyinmiata.com

The BRZ and FR-S twins are a direct competition to RF. And they are 200 hp at 2,800 lbs. While the ND Miata is at 155 hp (from the same sized 2.0 engine) and, I assume about 2,500 lbs or so, could be more. Twins are also significantly cheaper, I'd say by about 25%. And they have a back seat.
I predict that RF will not be a popular car. To me, personally, as an owner of two Miatas, it holds zero interest. While twins actually do.
PS. Mazda has never been particularly good at getting a lot of power from their engines. Which is unfortunate.
Never liked the Miata in the looks department. I've never owned a Japanese car. Driven a few of them and never felt connected or lusted after any of them. I'll admit the original NSX is a looker though.

Quite honestly, those who have not lived with a Miata for at least a short time, simply would not understand. It's not a good looking car, it doesn't have a social status, it's very pedestrian on paper. You need to experience the sum of its parts to know why a completely impractical and not particularly cheap car sold that many units for 25+ years now. And why any competition from larger companies with deeper pockets (BMW, Toyota. Mercedes, Porsche, Fiat, to name a few) have not been nearly as successful.
I would be fairly well amazed and willing to re-learned physics from scratch if you can get 210 hp out of that engine with 155 current hp by "exhaust and tune". That is what;s needed to make 993's power to weight ratio, considering 270hp and 3,100 lb for 993.
It's not relevant, though. Power in a Miata is not relevant. At least to me.
They are great cars and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I guess the BRZ is supposed to be competition for them but a friend of mine has one of those and I found it to be an unlovely thing. It's either not powerful enough or not light enough.
I had a 2nd Gen Miata back in the day and it was awesome. My twin brother drives an 89' 1st gen and will till the wheels fall off.

I understand the Miata is not about a lot of power, but the new ones are around 175whp with tune and exhaust. It is still a high compression (14:1) 2.0L engine.
Mazda's 2 seat soft top at introduction held my interest big time, if for nothing else because of 3 years history with a MY76 Triumph TR6 as a daily driver; Maroon ext. over blk int. complete with optional hard top. (Big sister's are nice when they bequeath their TR6 to little brother whilst at school)
As if it were yesterday I recall the Denver dealership sales geek going wayyy-out on a limb, needlessly, down playing the 4cyl's anemic HP figures.
Here's me the customer schooling the sales guy what the Miata was all about. "Dude,,, its dynamic's ... Lightweight, reliable/Jap quality, 4 season, 5sp, top down, rear wheel drive, affordable.."
Fast forward to 2017 and my sales primer would read the same.
"Dude,,, its dynamic's ... Lightweight, reliable/Jap quality, 4 season, 5sp, top down, rear wheel drive, affordable.." What's not to like.
2 neighbor couples here in Vail having recently started retirement both have 5 or 6yo Miata models that they drive for extended cross continent/Canada road trips.. With a trunk lid mounted luggage rack,, their in the wind for weeks at a time....
