Broken relay that controls fading of interior lights.
Does anyone know where the relay is that controls the fading of the interior lights and key illumination light? Mine seems to be failing.
The lights simply stay on all the time. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, they do the right thing.
Thanks.

I guess nobody has a shop manual that describes what controls the interior light fading mechanism.
Other problems that arise from this are my interior lights don't go off either which caused my battery to discharge. That was a bummer.
Anyway, thanks for any pointers.

I appreciate the reply.
Actually, the relay that is responsible for fading the interior lights and the key illumination light is faulty. They stay on all the time.
I was wondering if anyone knew where that sucker was so I can replace it.
I don't have the shop manuals but I'm sure someone has a set and might be so kind as to look up the misbehaving part.
Thanks.

My lights don't fade out.
Was that a new feature in 97? Maybe it was added in '97 the same time the light above the ignition was put in.
Can one change out a pre-fading relay to a fading one?

neunelf,
So when you get out of your car at night and lock the doors with your fob the interior lights don't fade-to-off?
Also, I thought all 993s had a light above the ignition switch.

My car is late '96 and ex UK. It also has the ignition light. My lights don't fade off (like my previous BMW 330ci or current Audi Allroad) they just turn off when I lock the doors. Should they fade??

No, the interior lights on my '96 turn off abruptly either by clicking the fob or letting them turn off normally after a few seconds.
The light above the ignition if I recall correctly from an old thread was added in '97. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think that's the case.

That's interesting.
My light fade out nicely when everything is working.
Even when I get in my car to go somewhere the lights fade out when I start up the car.
