the gallons of Mobil 1 I have stocked up (its circa £22 for 4 litres from Costco) which they said was fine.
Except that a ?W-40 weight synthetic at operating temperature is no thinner than a non-synthetic. Synthetic oils of a given weight at operating temperature are typically thinner than non-synthetics when cold (as relfected in the W rating), but though that might mean that your leaks are faster while sitting in the garage, it also means that your engine is lubricated more quickly on cold start - which might be more important than a bit more oil on the garage floor.

Found the blurb on the Mobil 1 "S" by the way, here it is:

STOP PRESS--The best got even better
New for 2003
Mobil1 with SuperSyn, with a unique combination of high-performance fluids, plus the SuperSyn anti-wear system for protection under the most extreme use, new Mobil1 with SuperSyn exceeds even the toughest industry standards, it features
* Outstanding wear protection
* Excellent high-and low-temperature performance.
* Improved protection against sludge and harmful deposits.
In short,
Mobil1 with SuperSyn has a reserve of capability that you may never need to call upon....but it's great to know it's there.

Piers

It was recommended to me to use Mobil 1 Motorsport, due to the mods to the engine, not the synthetic.
