Post 993 3.8 RSR

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and want to ask for some information from the group.

I have the opportunity to acquire a '95 993 3.8 RSR at what I feel is a fair price. I have been doing a bit of research on the car and would like to know the difference between a '95 and a '97 RSR. Any ideas or references would be appreciated.

The 993RSRs are all pretty much the same. Porsche made updates throughout production that was minor.......optional bodywork and larger wheels and bigger brakes were the significant differences. The earliest "stock-stripper RSRs" looked excatly like a 993 Supercup car........the optioned out RSR "souped up version" had much larger wheels & tires that necessitated bolt-on GT2 style wheelarches......and you could get massive 380mm brakes and carbonfiber superlightweight doors.
Good luck on the RSR!

Thanks for the info...

Do you know when the RSR made the transition to the GT-2 style body kit?

I have seen many RSR's at various events and I have come to the conclusion almost all of them are different, unlike Cup cars which seem to be more uniform. There are also quite a few non-factory RSR's floating around - some of which are quite nicely done and "correct". I would recommend purchasing a factory RSR if you are at all concerned with originality and resale value. Most factory RSR's will have been updated at some point so it will be hard to find one in truly original form, whatever that means.

Hi Glenn:

We have 2 Factory RSR's here at the moment, a '96 & '97 (plus a '95 Cup car)

If you would like to e-mail or call me directly with what equipment the car you are considering has, I'd be pleased to discuss this with you.

They did vary in options according to the original purchaser's wishes.

Right, there were a number of options. I ordered one in 1998 which had the RSR falres (similar look to GT2 flares, but not the same, not as big). Early RSR's had 8.5 & 10" wheels, later the flared ones had 9.5" and 11's. The options I ordered included the cable-adjustable front swaybar, the Premiere fuel cell with reserve tank, and the "Endurance brakes", which were 380mm discs and calipers that took thicker pads, u1908 instead of u1842. Also by this point (1998) the GT2 adjustable Bilsteins had been made standard. IIRC all of them were geared too tall, that is, they were geared for LeMans or Daytona, so everyone shortened them up with shorter gears or the 8:32 ring & pinion or both.

fishy, not the thread's date, but I thought 993 RSR was only manufactured in 1997/1998

Yeah, sorry about that, when you search a forum, it is hard to remember to check the date on ancient threads. Anyway yes I was a team helper for the Y-Me (breast cancer) team that had the first one, it was a black 1995.

This is an old thread but interesting anyway.

Barth agrees w/ Geolab
15 RSRs were built in late '97 as MY98 w/ the M64/75 RSR engine
it is unclear how many more may have been built in '98 before the changeover to the water cooled cars

With all due respect, there were definitely cars made in '95 and '96. I own a red one that is a 1996. The black 1995 for Y-Me was officially called "911 Cup with 3.8 RSR Engine" and that titling was retained through to when I ordered my 1998. If we go back far enough in Panorama magazine, there is an article that says John Ruther was smoking cigars with Alwin Springer when they dreamed this up, not that the idea was such a surprise after the 964 RSR. But it does hint at why these cars all had 964 crankshafts.

I don't think they built any more RSR's in 1998.

Also, for those that were race fans back in the day, remember Chris Cervelli (among others) ran an RSR, I think it was a 1996 or 1997. They did Daytona as well as a season or more of Pro Sportscar (aka IMSA).

thread...

I see John Ruther on a regular basis and he has spoken fondly of his time in a 993 RSR - I am pretty sure he said it was either a 1995 or 1996.

IIRC John Ruther was one of the drivers of the 1995 Y-Me car at Daytona. Not sure of the year, 1996?
