Post What's $$ reasonable for a brake job? Need feedback ASAP!

I've been quoted $1,600 for a brake job on my 95 993. OUCH!!! This includes:

-pads($207)
-rotors($450)
-sensors($70)
-anti-squeal shims($40)
-flush fluid ($80)
-labor ($500)

All OEM parts. Does this sound reasonable. Need info ASAP as it's in the shop waiting decision?

NO!

VERY expensive, they are ripping you off.

Is that just for the front brakes or all 4?

If you can drive to Atlanta I will do it for you for a bottle of Scotch. (You supply the parts)

It will take no more than 2 hours for me to do all 4 brakes.

Oh good God that is high. Please don't pay that. If you are at all able to turn a wrench you can do this job in under 3 hours, even the first time.
Look at Robins site www.p-car.com and he has plenty of instructions to help you along.

The parts aren't too bad, cost wise, but they included a bunch of stuff you don't need to replace (IMO). And the labor...ouch. Get a quote on parts from Suncoast they will probably be less. Just get new rotors, pads, and a couple bottles of brake fluid.

Greg,

Which of the items woudl you not replace? I've heard lot's of discussion on the anti-squeal shims? What about the sensors? Not sure if they need to be replaced. Thanks for the info.

Keith,

As long as you haven't worn out the sensors (warning light not on yet), you should be able to re-use them. (I was able to re-use all my brake pad wear sensors)

Most people don't put the anti squeal shims back in, I found the brakes to squeal less after leaving them out when I changed my brakes pads.

Even in RIPOFF Britain, it can be done cheaper.

They havent even mentioned that anything needs to be done to the calipers yet.

Keith,
I don't think you need to replace the sensors or anti squeel shims (I don't have either in my street car) since they aren't wear items. If you want to keep them just be careful when removing the sensors. If they are cracked or broken you might have to get new ones. I would just tie the two wires together and tape or zip tie them up out of the way.
Have you looked at your brake pads? are you sure they need replacing? same for the rotors.
Is this a dealer?

Do it yourself!

It is a very easy project and you'll save a ton of money. Get a Motive Products pressure bleeder (~$50) and the brake fluid flush is a cinch. Pads just pop in and out. Rotors are a matter of 2 screws each that come out with a hand screwdriver!!!!

Ben

ps - don't forget to let the parking brake off - it's damn hard to remove the rear rotors with it engaged

Greg,

This is independant repair shop. I had checked with the service department at the dealer in Greensboro, FCI and was quoted a price of $1,535 to do the work as well.

The indicator light came on just yesterday. I had a PPI done at another NC dealer less than 2,000 miles ago and they said that the brakes were in good shape! WOW, they sure went downhill in 2k miles!!!

Consensus seems to be to save the $ on sensors and not replace.

Keith,

If your warning light came on that means you have to replace the sensor, if you want to have the brake pad wear indicator function. Or you can short out the two wires that on the brake pads sensor and tie it off like Greg have recommended.

Let's say you don't want to DIY. Then here is a more reasonable breakdown from a shop. All parts OEM but prices lower than dealer.

Pads (F&R): $160
Rotors (F&R): $400
Sensors all around: $70
Fluid: $20
Labor: $250

TOTAL: $900

This assumes you really need the rotors and sensors which you may not.

Thanks for the feedback.. Really wish I had the nerve to tackle the brake job! Scares the heck out of me that I'll have a mess when I'm done of brake failure, screw up new rotors or gosh awful squeal that I want be able to get rid of.

The shop does at least offer a 12K/12 month warranty on their work.

Once again, thanks for the sanity check.

This is the first time Ive heard of an independent charging more than the OPC.

Have you spoken to the OPC who did the PPI.
If you complain to them, maybe they will offer to carry out the work at a better price.

Thats what happened to me, although in my case I still found an independent to be far cheaper.

JC,

The cheapest I could find OEM pads (front only, for example) was in neighborhood of $130.00, plus or minus $10 as I checked around. Are SoCal P-dealers THAT off base compared to the rest of the county? Where did you find them at that price? Thanks!

Edward
