Question Xenon "Litronic" Headlights from Carnewal

Has anybody ordered and installed the Xenon headlight upgrade for a 993 from Gert?

I thought that was just the factory litronic kit?

Robin,

You are correct. Is it a good upgrade?

It's is a good but very expenisve upgrade. You have to ask yourslef if it's worth over €2k for brigher headlights. There are a lot of other mods I'd rather do before adding Litronics.

Have you considered the cheaper HID options discussed on this board?

It is not nearly as bright as some of the standard factory xenon headlights found on most of the Japanese imports.

But it is the only "legal" method of upgrading to a xenon based headlight system for your 993.

The main problem with the cheaper HID solution is that it is not legal in several countries. Where I live it is not legal and can also cause lower insurance payout in the case of an accident.

Given the fact that the standard Halogen headlights are crappy, to say the least, the Litronic kit is an excellent and worthwhile upgrade. It's not cheap but it's factory and properly engineered. I did the upgrade several years ago and never looked back.

Guys,

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with Viken "It's not cheap but it's factory and properly engineered". My order is in.

Thanks,

Cool Litronics

I bought the litronic lights from the guy on ebay. KIt looks complete with original Bosch boxes, control boxes, etc.

Has anyone done this conversion? The only part I am concerned about is removing the wires/pins from the headlight plug. Is this difficult or tricky? ANy advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure if you caught the DIY write up in the p-car.com DIY pages yet about the factory litronic DIY.

The instructions on Robin's Site are great. The biggest problem I had was with the pins. I finally got the trick. I ended up using a paperclip and did one side of the pin at a time and it worked perfectly.

Good Luck.

Viken

How is the light pattern on the OEM Litronics?

Seems to me that one of the main problems with the halogen lights is the pattern.

I have a related question.

This spring, when I first brought my newly purchased slightly used 34K mile 993 in for its first local service the dealer asked me for $100 labor plus parts to change the bulb - to which I said "NO - I will figure it out myself"

So my question is - what are the ongoing/routine replacement parts needed if I go with the Porsche Litronic setup.

A H1 lamp now costs me a measly $5...

What are the maintenance parts costs of the Litronic setup - lamp? ballast? starter?

It is clearly wider and farther. Then again, the standard headlights didn't have a light pattern to speak of. LOL!

Seriously, I don't pay attention to such details. I just drive the car. If I see the road at night, that's all that matters.

Steve,

A good quality H1 lamp like a Phillips Vision Plus or Sylvania SilverStar will probably cost around $20.00 each, not $5.00.

As far as the Litronic system, the ballast and igniters should last the life of the car. The lamps (bullbs), since there is no filament to burn out, will also last indefinitely. However, the HID lamp output will deteriorate over time, but you're talking two or three thousand hours before you'd notice it.
