Thanks Mike - that makes sense.

In the commercial building industry HID lamps last 10,000 to 20,000 hours compared with the best halogens that only 2,000 to 3,000 hours. Even with without routine replacements the Litronics are an expensive proposition.

I think (this year - for me) the choice is PSS9s and not Litronics.

Question is lights or not. The standard halogen head lights are so bad that it seems like I have no headlights at all. Seriously thinking of the OEM Litronic upgrade as well. Night driving is a pain in the a... when you can't see the road.

Steve,

It really is a question of safety. S3 is correct, the OEM halogens are awful. In Upstate NY, almost all of the out of city driving is on country roads that are dark and populated with deer. The HID conversion is the best money I've spent on my car - literally like night and day - the low beam HID's light up the road further than the old halogen HIGH BEAMS !!

If you live in an area that has well lit roads then it is not as much of a concern.

Yes, the longevity of the HID's is excellent. However, look at how quickly the light output degrades - after 8,000 hours (one year with three shifts), the light output is 70% of new.

We change the lamps in our building every year.

What do the Factory Litronics use for High Beams? Is it just a normal Halogen bulb or is it something special?

HID bulbs are typically rated to last 10 times longer than halogen. That in itself nearly pays for the non-OEM HID conversion!

HID light output is typically 2.5 x halogen, so even if the HID is only producing half the light compared with a new one, it is still brighter than a new halogen.

The OEM lights are undoubtedly superior to the DIY HID conversion but the price is somewhat steep. What ever happened to the Litronic group buy?

Graham,

My comment to Steve (that you quoted) was specifically for HID in an industrial or commercial lighting application. Not automotive.

The high beam is just a Halogen bulb. I think it's an H1 but I am not sure. Since I replaced my standard units with Litronic's, I never use the useless high beams.

Skip,

The high beam lamps are H1 halogen, 55 watt. Viken is right, the HID low beams are so bright that you can barely tell if the high beams are switched on.

Thanks Viken & Mike,

Since doing the Catz HIDs, I too don't use the High beams and was wondering if the Porsche Litronics had a different High Beam.

I have put the Catz HIDs next to the Porsche Litronics and could not tell the difference. The light patterns were the same and the output was also the same. Too bad our government has made the HID kit decision it has...
