Default A different kind of project in the garage today...

It's been forever since I've been on rennlist. With two kids now things are as busy as ever so rennlist time has taken a back seat. Anyway, did a fun project with my 4 year old today and sent it to a handful of people and a couple said I had to post it on rennlist. I thought, it's been a while since I've done anything on here so why not, you guys would get a kick out of it. The background...my son got a 991 GT3 powerhweels from Santa this past Christmas and he has been asking for headlights...and a cool switches like on my racecar. Who doesn't like switches! So, I finally got around to designing it and building it with him today. I used two 6 volt rechargeable batteries and wired them together to make a 12v, which is what the LED bulbs were rated for. I found some that fit perfectly in the battery housing with the motor's 12v battery. We modified the headlights, wired it up and installed the switch. He was a happy little boy

That's awesome, quality time spent with your kids is never regrettable! And an educational experience to boot, well done!

Nice job. You should detail the process for the DIY forum.

Yes, that's the next step when your little guy gets a little bigger and wants some more speed. You can either run two 12v batteries in series or get a 24v battery. I did the same for my son's Ferrari F1 electric car. Check out batteryshark.com for the batteries (no affiliation). You may find that the extra power causes the hard plastic wheels to spin, particularly on sharp sloped curb aprons. The fix for that is to cut up old mountain bike tires and screw them to the rear wheels. Like the full size version, it's a slippery slope...

Thanks, guys. Figured some of you would get a kick out of this project. If nothing else, it might bring back memories of cool projects you did with your kids.

No, original motor. Have these had issues?

Yes, the 24v path is on the list in the future. This headlight project actually started as a way to juice the motor but my son really wanted headlights and he's not quite ready for more than 5 mph. I bought a razor type scooter when I got him the car so I could keep up with him and teach him how to drive. It's been a lot of fun coaching him along.

Yes, this is on the list down the road. My ideal situation is to wire it up with two 12v batteries in series with one on a switch so I can switch on and off the extra juice (kind of like giving him a third gear...or nitrous, ha!). Thanks for the link! And, your idea on adding rubber tires is excellent, thanks for that as well.
