Comparing a 1995/6 993 vs 1991 911 Turbo
I have just sold my 944 Turbo and am ready to step back into a 911. I wanted to get opinions to help me decide between an 91/92 911 Turbo or a 95/96 993. Before the 944 Turbo I had an 88 911 Turbo and loved the acceleration and power. I was disappointed in the 944 Turbo after being spoiled by the 911. What are the primary differences in 993 versus the 91 turbo's. Both cars are running in the high 30's to low 40's for low mileage examples. Is there a tremendous amount of difference in the power and acceleration, and is one car more enjoyable to drive than the other? All opinions appreciated. This car will be my primary driver and repair and dependabilty are an issue.

When I stepped up from my 80SC I looked at the 91turbo vs 993. I opted for the 993 for the following reasons, the turbo was no faster than the 993 and the 993 is a much more refined car in just about every catagory. If you want a C2 turbo that is much faster you must move up to the 94 3.6 turbo (a rocket), but you are now in the $50k+ range. I own my 993 for two years and have never regretted my chioce. But that 3.6 turbo that's a much different animal.......Mike W

Agree with Mike. When I was looking, I first considered a 964, then "stretched" myself into hunting for a 993, then figured a '91 turbo is kinda in the neighborhood, sort of. The performance difference and refinement wasn't there, IMO. I went with an immaculate G.Red/tan 993 and haven't wished for the '91 since
Now a 993 turbo........

I was also in the same situation when I was looking for my third 911. Did look at a few 993 and loved the cars. I did not even look at the Turbo cars. Then my Porsche dealer told me to drive a Amazongreen 911 Turbo 1991 in very good condition. I was hooked! The Turbo cars are a beast. The are not as well balanced as the 993s.
The Turbos have a split personality! A great hiway drive with low wind noise and lots of lether and equipment. And when you take it to a racetrack (which I do regularly) it transforms to a racecar. I know all 911s do this more or less. The C2T does this more than any 911 I have driven! This is why I did buy my 911 Turbo 1991!
I also have a SAAB Turbo as a everyday car. If I was to have a 911 as my ONLY car, I would get the 993!

I would have to disagree with MikeW on the fastness of the C2 Turbo and the 993. Top speed wise, they are about the same. But quickness from 0 to 60 or 100mph, the C2 Turbo will put the 993 to shame. How do I know?
I had a '97 C2S (Black), and now a '92 C2 Turbo (Silver). I am not a race car driver, and won't be able to duplicate the numbers. But Car and Driver magazine tested the C2 Turbo 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds. Factory number is 4.8 seconds. I know that to get these great numbers you have to be very abusive to the clutch, but that is besides the point.
Now, If I were to pick just one Porsche for everyday use, I will pick the 993 also. Because it is easier to drive and live it from day to day. But the Turbo will put a smile on your face every time the boost kicks in. I was somewhat unhappy with my C2S because of the lack of power. No, it was more like the lack of that feeling when your back is pushed in the back of the seat and things get blurry (sp?) quickly as you climb up the revs counter to redline in the C2 Turbo.
Regards,
Sonny Vo
ps: I will not go back to a N/A Porsche unless it's a daily driver. Or an early 911.

Hello ,
I'm chosing also between the 2 models(not the turbo one), firstable, I was looking before for a 964 C4 '93 or 94 model, but Rennlist and smartgroups, make me change my mind! .I will go for the 993C4 even if it will be more expensive. I think is a good investment and a reliable beutiful car!!.I love the design.
I saw a extraordinary 993C4S black...have to talk first with my banker...!
Fun to see that we are some guys to do the next BIG step in 911(993)family !!
One advice compare models, try it, take your time, ...patince will pay!
bye!

Sonny, I really don't want to get into a my dad is tougher than your dad scenario in the c2 turbo vs 993. I have driven both and see very little difference. I also take numbers in the car mags with a grain of salt. Fact is both are great cars, but for $50k the 3.6 turbo leaves them in the dust. This thread has my juices flowing - anybody want a real nice polar silver 993? Mike W

On the racetrack a standard 964 3.3 Turbo with a skilled driver will leave a 993 C2 M030 with an equal skilled driver behind! A 964 C2 M030 with a racecardriver will leave both behind

Craps -
I own an 86 911 Turbo and a 1995 993 C4. When we got the turbo we already had the 993. In driving various late 80s turbos, I can say that acceleration is much faster across the board compared to any N/A 993. The C2 Turbos (in stock form) are even a bit quicker, but may feel a bit less agressive as the car is more refined. Our Turbo has received several performance upgrades so that it is now close to 440 HP (373 RWHP). The difference in straight line acceleration and power between these 2 cars is dramatic. The 993, on the other hand, handles on an entirely different level and is way more refined. I generally prefer to drive the Turbo because every time I hit the gas and the Turbo comes on I am left with a big smile.

MikeW,
I know what you mean. I didn't mean this as a p*ssing match. I was just pointing out how I felt about the two cars. To me they are very different cars. No hard feelings.
One thing though, I have not seen a $50k '94 3.6 Turbo advertised anywhere, although I only look in Autoweek as I am not in the market for one. All I see are cars with asking prices of $62+. These car low mileage cars. Try rpm sports cars website and you will be surprised with the asking prices.
Regards,
Sonny Vo
ps: I also want a '94 3.6 Turbo S flatnose, :-)

Sonny, no problem, we are both into our Porsche's and that's good. I have seen 3.6 turbo's in the mid 50's here in florida. There have been a couple advertised in the autoweek classified, but they do appear to trade quickly. Prices on turbo's do seem to be coming down. there is a 26,000 mile 993 turbo(yellow may be the reason) trading at $73k. Mike W

I would like to thank everybody for their imput. I am going to go and test drive both over the next couple of weeks and try and decide which to get. I do love the straight line acceleration on the Turbo's, but ride quality would be nice.
Have a great weekend.
