Were the factory radios equipped with speed dependent volume in 1996 models?
Since my previously owned 1996 has a after market Alpine unit I cannot tell... I need to know because installation of a Becker or Blaupunkt navigation unit is planned and they need the speed input from the OBD II.

John,
The speedometer input to the radio goes in at the factory amplifier's side under the seat. Look for a white/red wire that connects to pin 13 on the amplifier.
If you don't have the factory amplifier anymore, look for the same white/red wire behind the speedometer (pin 2), tach (pin 12), also it is hooked up to pin 11 of the air conditioning heater control unit, and pin 9 on the DME. The good thing is that all these connections mentioned above uses the same white/red wire.
Hope that will help.

My '96 did not come with the speed dependant volume control and my understanding was that this feature was added in '97.
Robin, are you saying that some '96 cars had this?

Viken,
I have no idea. All I know is that my radio volume is the same no matter what speed I drive.
But I was looking at the 1996 993 schematics for those connections that John needed.

My (early) '96 does not have speed dependent volume. I am also under the impression that was a feature added in '97, but maybe it was a running change added later in '96.
E.g., I do have the '95 (& earlier) style twin trumpet horns - go figure.

This is really interesting, I first experienced SCV in a friend's 1990 corvette. I guess it was ahead of its time. I thought it was a great feature!
My '96 was built in March, and has the 10-speaker upgraded stereo. Would be neat if that feature was included, but I've never seen any indication of it.

You are not missing much, I found it be annoying and disabled the feature.

In the 1997MY the Becker radio sortware changed to use speed dependant volume control (GAL). This function can be retrofitted to pre-97 cars (with up-dated radio) with a connection to the central electric board (CEB) terminal J41. Please e-mail me if you want the wiring diagram.
