Default Hi Idle - Solved!

I have engine and trans back in the car and engine fires up and the car drives well. Alignment seems way off. So much marking the toe adjusters.

The only problem I now have is t hat the idle is way high - 2200 rpm +.

If I disconnect the ISV, the car starts with a lower idle, but once warmed up, it goes high again.

I guess this points to a manifold leak. I have pulled the vacuum lines - the one at the rear of the intake manifold, the AC one under windshield and at the blower, it seems to hold vacuum well.

I've sprayed starter fluid around the front of the manifold near MAF without much affect.

Any other ideas?

Vince,
Did U thoroughly clean the ISV with carb cleaner when it was off the car and then reinstall to what results with the idle? All I can think of is a possible manifold vacuum leak, based upon the eliminating of vacuum lines from the equation, if not the ISV.

Also, did you put some mile on the car to see if the idle settles?

Are you sure the throttle cable is routed and attached correctly?

I will check the ISV again.

I hope so. The fact that it idles low with ISV cable detached and cold hopefully is a sign that is ok. Then again it may also show that isv is working.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. In my limited experience, when the cable holds the throttle open a bit, you notice it immediately, cold or hot engine.

You probably routed the throttle cable through the wrong hole in the engine tin. One opening is for tiptronic, the other for standard shift. Really dumb design, easy to screw up (ask me how I know). Takes two mins to check.

+1 on both comments on throttle cable installation. Routing through the wrong hole in engine tin will screw up its operation. Also, the installation of the cable attach point will effectively shorten cable length leading to high idle. Ask me how I know all of this!

Check throttle linkages are at idle stop, including the cruse control if any. My experience is that manifold leak causes poor running, I have not experienced a leak causing high idle so high.

I have dropped the engine some so I could check out the cable. I am running through the hole closest to the centerline of the car - which I believe is the correct one. the grommet through the tin had come off, so I reseated it.

The throttle actuator does not return all the way to the adjust screw stop. Should it? I can pull it back maybe a 1/16th of an inch - is this normal?

Where is the turnbuckle adjustment for the cable sleeve length? Under the center cover?

What do you mean about cable attachment point?

It turned out that the throttle cable length needed adjustment. Between dropping the engine and r&r of the pedal box necessitated an adjustment.

All is good once again in the universe.
