Default Alternator belts advice please

Hi guys,

Thanks to some very helpful advice on here and various external threads - mainly p-car I have finally managed to remove my alternator/fan/shroud from the car and also separate the three components.

My new alternator is due to be delivered today and the fan and shrouds have gone off to be cleaned and painted so my thoughts have turned to reconstruction and finally getting the car back on the road.

So to my next dilemma where I hope somebody here can help.

There were two drive belts as usual. One is 760mm long and the other is 776mm as expected and outlined in the p-car instructions.

But due to my own stupidity I thought they were both the same so I didn't make a note of which one went on the front pulley and which one went on the back. Doh!

On one of the P-car instructions there is a close-up photo (attached) where the belt size luckily happens to be showing in the image so I can see that the outer belt for this particular car was 760 mm. So I made the natural deduction that the short one went on the outer pulley and the longer one on the inner pulley.

But I just stumbled across a photo on another forum that shows the outer belt (i.e. the final one to be installed) as being 776mm.

I have ordered the two belts to match the ones that I took off the car but if anyone can confirm which way round they go I would be grateful.

Many thanks

Marc

The inner belt is the fan belt and is 776 and has the sensor running on it. The outer belt is the alternator one, and is 760 for a tip and 776 for a manual although this does depend on what pulleys you have on!!

If what came off worked then go with that again

Okay thanks for that. What came off the car was 1 x 760 and 1 x 776 so I have ordered the same as replacements.

My problem is I can't remember which way round they went. Based on your note above it sounds like the inner belt is always 776 so that's fine. But your following sentence suggests the outer one would only be 760 if I had a tiptronic but my car is a manual.

Would it be obvious from the pulleys which size belt goes where and can I assume the 776 is always the inner belt therefore I must have a 760 on the outer pulley?

To add to the above, the update pully, as in photo, uses same belt on Carrera and updated belt size on Turbo.

Just to add more confusion, that does not look like an updated pulley to me. Looks like the centre washer is a separate piece. Updated pulley will have it manufactured into it as one piece

So is it always the case that the inner belt will be the 776 one?

If so then my outer belt must have been the 760 one.

It would seem so!

TBH it will be obvious if the belt is wrong, far too loose or it wont fit over the pulleys!!

That's what I have on '98, which has the updated pulley.

EDIT: the updated pulley is the outer one where it doesn't have extra washers on outside and doesn't hold extra shims.

Hi Marc,

Here is a DIY I wrote that may answer your questions. I just updated the thread
with a post at the end with a new link to the original photo album on goggle+.

Hope this helps.

Gold chromate finish = new pully, silver sheetmetal stamped pully = original. Hard to tell in photo.
