Default Will the new Governator be able to repeal the car tax?

Curious to California Rennlist members....
Will Ahhnold be able to make good on his promise to repeal the car tax?
It's too early perhaps, but what is the word in California about his chances of doing this.
I also wonder how the lost tax income will be made up? What a thorny problem!

My understanding is that the Davis increase in car taxes was equal to approximately $4 billion. That is alot of $'s to find in an already dismal financial landscape. It will be very interesting to watch how this all unfolds.

Default Worry about Florida too

I noticed you're listed as being in Florida. As a former Californian and current Arizonan, we may all be well served worrying about our own state and federal government fiscal messes even though California's is getting so much press. I'm sure Arnold will be able to get the Assembly to repeal this unfair car tax, lower taxes in general and fix California's fiscal problems until the next liberal governor ruins the state again.

On the 25th anniversary of his endowment for future Californians, Howard Jarvis must be having a good laugh from wherever his spirit resides these days..

Default What's a car tax?

Is it an annual excise tax based on the value of the car? If so, we have in in Massachusetts. Fortunately, it diminishes significantly as the car gets older, so for my 911 it's relatively modest.

I'm Curious to learn more about this CA "auto tax" as well. As kocsis mentioned, MA has an auto excise tax, collected at the municipal level, which is relatively cheap. I think the year I purchased my Audi new, it was only about $750 and that was based on a $53k MSRP. It has become steadily less expensive since as the car has aged.

Currently, the tax effectively drops 10% a year. Value of car drops 10% pa. I was under the impression that MA drops the value of the vehicle more quickly.

Man, you guys make Texas look so good.

We pay about $65/year, per car. I think if it varies between cars at all, it's based on the car's GVWR, not its value, to reflect wear & tear on the roads.

I think Anald will be able to repeal the tax. There are already
assy men that were starting lawsuits- saying the tax was
unconstitutional, so We'll see. All Anald has to do is cut taxes in
this state, reduce entitlement programs and businesses
will come back- More business means more state revenue.
The state got itself into this mess with Davis on the helm,
gross spending during the DotCom years and they did not
cut back when the companies went south. A perfect example is
state prison guards. Their union cut a deal with Davis and when
they helped him get elected , he gave them astonomical wage increases
some guards make close to 150K a year. Its ludicrous. Davis was
a crook. there is no other state that is hijacked like california.
30 miles inland and this state is no different than Nebraska.
But because of the heavy special interest groups and enititlement
groups that reside in LA and the San Fran area the 'Normal' people of this
state do not have a voice. But somehow they had a huge voice yesterday!
and that made me feel good! OK sopabox mode OFF!

FYI:

In California, you have a "car tax" EVERY single time a vehicle is sold. This means new, used, used from dealership, or used from a private party. This is a requirement to register. In my county, it's around 7%, which is about $4500 for a 60K car.

What the Governator is trying to get rid of is the "registration fee", which is due for each car registered for use in California. This year, it grew from ~$200 to ~$700.

Can't argue much with how OldGuy described it above, but with the state currently in a $10B Davis-induced deficit it might be difficult for even Arnold to remove the 3X vehicle fee hike. From the numbers above (which I have also seen elesewhere), that would make the effective deficit at $14B instead of just $10B.

I think that Arnold is going to make some very effective (and necessary) cuts, but even resolving the $10B mess he is inheriting will be difficult enough.

The previous tax rate PER YEAR was roughly 1.25%. So now we are looking at almost 4% per year. When I bought my car last year, I paid approx. $800 registration on a $61K purchase. So next year even with deperciation I can look forward to a $2000+ just to register this 7 year old car. Now this was in ADDITION to the 8.5% sales tax that you pay for the FULL value of any car purchased REGARDLESS of the fact that you may have traded in a car. This was designed to help subsidize the other stupid initiative of giving Drivers Licenses to illegal aliens... Hopefully both initiatives will be Terminated.

Here is a web site you can go to, to file an illegal tax
refund on your car registration fees. If you send it in
now the chances of getting some back are better.
