Default Techron and oil changes

Guys,

can someone educate me on the relationship between using Techron and oil changes?

i must admit that i am a rather unscientific user. i toss in a bottle (when filling my fuel tank) every 1,000 miles or so. my logic is that at $ 6/bottle its cheap if it avoids carbon buildup. i've never considered any adverse effect of Techron on my engine oil. is there?

is there consensus on the optimal approach to using Techron?

Rohan, I do it the same way you do.

My assumption is, if gasoline is not getting past the rings and contaminating my oil supply, neither will the Techron.

Regards to all.

Consensus is to do it every 3000 miles and do it before oil change:
one bottle fo thechron when you fill up, drive the tank empty, fill up, drive empty and chane oil.

David, some of it IS getting past the rings (I assume gasoline will burn before it gets there...)

Changing oil obviously then takes care of that deposit the goes past rings.

FYI, another consensus is to change oil every 3000 miles.

Finn:

I appreciate your view, but can it be the case that Techron isn't similarly flammable?

FYI:

Another post on the "Carbon Buildup" Thread recalls that the interval for Techron is every 3K miles, as per Chevron's Site. I haven't checked this myself, but it does ring a bell to me. Just thought I'd pass this on as I keep seeing the word "consensus," which means nothing if we're ALL wrong.

Per Chevron: To keep the entire fuel system clean, use Chevron TECHRON Concentrate every 3,000 miles.

David,

You're right, it should be as flammable as gasoline but if Techron "loosens" some of tiny deposits which aren't flammable and those are what ends up in oil.

Steve W. once said this (deposits going to oil), I assume this is based on checkig the oil after Techron (or similar) tratment so he suggested to change the oil after the use.

Obviously if you do this on regular bases and drive the car hard (assuming there's not much deposits anyway), shouldn't be a problem IMO not changing the oil.

I do it since the interval Techron recommens and my oil change is the same anyway.

Finn:

Makes sense. I think I've done it (Techron) with sufficient frequency (every 2000-2500 miles) that I doubt I'm unleashing loads of particles into my oil.

But now you've got me all nervous about it, so I guess I'll go and get my oil changed!

Regards to all.

Don't get nervous David but for sure, changing your oil won't harm anything!

I use Chevron premium exclusively. The sign on the pump says it has Techron in it. Hope Chevron is truthful!

Most all gasoline is pumped through interstate lines so it is essentially identical. Only at the local distribution center, can additives fortify the fuel.

I wonder how much Techron is actually in the fuel?

According to Chevron's website its gas has about 1/10th the strength of the Techron concentrate & the concentrate is not likely to provide any benefits for a consistent user of Chevron gas.

Just to confirm, if you use Techron every 3k miles, do you still change oil every 3k miles?

Default Synthetic and factory rec

With the use of Mobil 1 and the two factory filters, my dealer here in Florida (Champion) states that Porsche indicates changes at 7500 miles. I am changing at about 4,000 mile intervals though. I seriously don't believe that it is necessary at 4K but I do it just to treat the car with extra loving care! Mobil 1 is a tremendously effective lubricant. It is vastly superior to natural petroleum. The 3K change was an historical precedant set over the years based on natural oil. Synthetics are far longer lasting. Of course, there are those who will state that much carbon, combustion by products, acids go into the oil solution suspension and frequent oil changes remove them. However, todays filters remove most all of what is in suspension and synthetics resist acid build up.

Of course, you must make up your own mind.
Realistically, we are not talking about $19.99 oil changes here. For about $175. a pop, you want to get some serious benefits out of your oil change. What you cannot ignore is that Porsche, who designed and built your dear car, recommends 7500 mile changes. My suggestion is to use that as an outside MAXIMUM for changes and do it under that mileage number for your own peace of mind.

skytop,

How do you figure $175 for an oil change? It's more like $70. $20 for the filters and $50 for the Mobil One, even less for the oil if you get it at Walmart in the 5 liter containers. For the price people are paying for oil and filters they are very much inclined to change oil quite often as doing so will not hurt anything.

Hi Ron:
Guess I must be getting robbed at the dealer. That's what I remember paying. There are about 14 qts which is about $56. and the filters plus the labor.
I just called up Champion in Pompano and asked what an oil change costs. The reply was $189. plus tax and EPA charge. Guess I was paying about the going rate.

There are lots of ways to cut this expense down to size and I don't blame anyone for going a more inexpensive route. I no longer do my own oil changes. 30 years of doing them myself and now I have someone else perform this service. I am tired of hauling old oil to the station.
