Arrow Seriously considering 993 - advice please...

I just took on a new job that makes me put 90 miles a day on my current ride, a 2001 Boxster. That car already took a huge hit in almost 2 years of depreciation so I am trying to sell it before the mileage adds to the wrong side of the equation. I always wanted a 993 anyway and I assume they are fully depreciated... Mostly, I would not mind putting mileage on a 993 because this would be a keeper (my prev. car, a 911SC had 175000 trouble free miles when I sold it). Questions:
1) Is it reasonnable or do you think the 993 will FINALLY depreciate more when the 997 comes out - I can wait with the boxster for a while, it's fine...

2) can I retrofit a 993C2S or C4s front bumper on a regular car (bland bumper IMO).. how much $$$ ?

3)I noticed a few of those cars still have a warranty (extended?). Is that transferable?

4) can you update the interior easily? I am now used to the modern 986 - would not mind transfering a 996 style shifter and a set of those pretty sparco seats advertised on excellence...

Sorry for the length.. and of course if one of you wants to trade in his/her 993 for a nice Viola metallic boxster 2.7, I am all ears ! ;-)

Greg.

The 993 is a great choice (this is the 993 board after all). Although I would like to think so, I do not think our 993's have fully depreciated yet. Could be close though and the 997 will not have a big effect on the 993 because of our "last of the air cooled" tag. IMHO, the Boxster and 996 will suffer greater depreciation with the introduction of the 997.

Regarding the upgrades, bumpers, shifters and seats are easy upgrades dependent on your checkbook.

Not an expert here but I believe 993's are out of factory warranty unless they purchased an extended one. You can purchase an extended warranty if you buy your car from a dealer or get a policy from a third party provider.

Lastly, good luck in your search but doubt you will get any traders on this board!

Hey Greg,

DO IT... Go buy a 993. You'll love it. As far as the depreciation, who cares. If you enjoy the car then you've gotten your money's worth.
My opinion is, and this is clearly speculation. The 997 will not cause significant depreciation of a 993. The 996 however will take a big dump.
As far as updating the car, your probably asking that question on the wrong forum. Most of us here don't particularly like the 996 look. The modern electronics, shift ****, etc. it's not classic porsche. Those of us who bought pre owned 993's probably could of bought a preowned 996 at near the same price. We went for the 993 because of it's classic porsche feel.

Good luck..

You can get the 996 shifter for a 993, Gert has them, and there was a thread the other day with pictures of a 993 owner who did it. As for the seats, not sure, I hear the mounting between the 993 and 996 is different. As for the bumper, you can certainly change it, lots have done it, do a search and you will find all kinds of options.

When you hear many of the professional sports car drivers talk about Porsche and their latest 911 models, they often refer to the 993 and how special it is.. that says alot as fas I am concerned. I do like the looks of the 996 w/ aero kit or the turbo looks great, but I hear WAY too many stories about people getting their engines replaced due to falts. The 996 board has a guy with a 2002 996 with around 10k miles getting a replacement engine. Luckily most the 996's are still under warranty. Just think when cars go out of warranty????? I would be very afraid to own a 996 w/out warranty.

B-Line--nice to see you back!

They sell very nice seats for the 993 or most porsches look at the Cobra Misano it is a beautiful seat and very light all leather. The RS shifters are nicer than the 996 shifters. I have also driven the 996 and I think the 993 is definately more of a drivers car I don't think you would be disappointed at all. The turbo spoilers along with several other front and rear spoilers can be used and are made for the narrow body car and the wide body cars. Tons of options! I am a living example see the pic link below.

Hi Greg,

Do it! You'll find the 993 a great car and very reliable. You only have to look at the older 911 models still trundling along with hundreds of thousands of milesunder their belts (just like your old one). If you are going to use it regularly you don't have to pay a a premium for a very low mileage example.

The nose job is easy - see my avatar and is becoming increasingly popular as people find out how easy it is. There are loads of ther options as well for front and rear spoilers and other posters have touched on your other parts queries.

I don't think that 996 prices will drop out completely but I see a parallel with the 964/3.2 Carerra prices where they have settled down with some significant overlap. The 997 will have a negative impact on them though as it's almost like Porsche are admitting their error in getting away from the curvy coke bottle profile (when viewed from above) and the classic lights Personally I think the best rear is on the current S models which have a light strip across the whole back of the car; just like the old ones...

Good luck and I think I'll have a look at those seats that were mentioned!

Cheers,

David

The guys have said it all - the 993 is a dream machine.

UK (probably the same world-wide) experience of extended warrantee is that if it is a Porsche warrantee it is only transferable if you buy the car PRIVATELY - if the car is purchased from any garage the extended warrantee expires. Went through this last year when buying my car. After market warrantees are available if you don't want to pay the high price charged by Porsche.

The latest European Car Says it all. "Own a Legend" Not a mass market car. Ever hear the differenece when you clsoe a boxster versus a 993 car door? Solid, handmade craftsmanship not made by Valmet in Finland (also makes paper machines) but by quality.

You wont regeret the 993. but count on antoher $10k in deprecaition. the boxset will do that in a year.....

Having one of each. A 98 993 c2 cab and a 99 996 c2 both with just over 32k miles I'm probably a little more objective than some. If I were going to be in the car for 90 miles a day I think I would look for a 996. The 993 certainly has more old time sports car feel which some translate into more of a driver's car. If I was heading out for a brisk Sunday drive, no brainer. Take the 993. If I was heading for the track, the 996 (mine is now a track only car so I am biased here). If I had to spend two hours a day on a freeway, I think the 996 would win out. Just my 2 cents worth. I love them both.

I am also considering my first Porsche purchase. 1996 993 C4S with 53K. Dealer wants 45,900, but our economy here in Colo. is soft and was considering waiting to see how things shake out. Car has been on lot about 1-2mos and is in "good" condition with some interior wear and severe road rash on rims, otherwise it looks ok. Any advice would help. I am an old airhead with VWs and would probably do what I can on the car within reason.
