Default RS motor mount bolt hardness question

I recieved my RS motor mounts from DG today... YEAH!!

One thing I noticed which was a bit strange.

The main bolt ( 900.082.030.02 ) has a hardness rating stamped on it of 8.8.

However, I seem to remember ( mainly viperbob's post ) about installing the solid mounts and he was trying to find a 10.9 hardness bolt???

Will the 8.8 be ok?

Any clarification on this from anybody?

Jeff,

On my solid mounts, I just wanted a stronger bolt for the mods I had done and for those I have planned (I am in the process of pulling the turbos out and have a little work done to them). So soon, I should be running 600+ HP at the crank.

It never hurts to have a stronger bolt. The 8.8s are fine for a stock TT with RS mounts (and remember the RSs were not running over 400HP like your car).

From what I think I know, which is more than what I actually know, the 10.9 is harder but more brittle and the grade 5 (8.8) is softer but more flexible so - if you have something like a motormount or alternator or something where all kinds of torque is being applied all different directions perhaps the grade 5 would be OK?? I bought em all just in case. As for the RS mounts, I don't think they (here I go again) made a whit of difference on my car - I'm going to slap the ultimate solid cupcar mounts tonight and see what that does.

Jeff,

Did you get a new alternator, just in case? I was thinking of doing th RS pulley this weekend. I thought it would be fun to pull my car apart again.....

Not yet.. I figure if I screw it up, then I can just have them ship me one. I have another daily driver that I can use in the mean time.

Just an update...

So it appears that the engine carrier for the turbo is different than the NA by a few MM's. But enough to make the recommended bolt not long enough.

So I'm off to search for a M12 x 1.5 x 120 GR 8.8+ bolt! The standard 105 mm one is too short.

If I can't find one, then I'll probably have to take out some of the washers in the RS motor mount assembly. I'd rather not do that, but if I can't find a longer bolt, then I'll probably end up doing that.

Jeff,

I wouldn't take out the washers - they seemed an important part to me - not sure the body of the mount will take the torque from the bolt. I'm no expert but I wouldn't have wanted to put them in without the washers....

Jeff,

As Ben mentioned, do not take out the washers on the mounts. They are there for a reason. As tough as it may seem, look for a bolt. Remember the Alfa Fiat place over off San Antonio near 101 might be a good place to look. If they had that stupid nut for Nelson, they may have what you need.

Just a thought...

I am in the process of removing the alternator (and a bunch of other stuff to install the boost controller and the A/F monitor). Just ready to pull out the fan and shroud. Then we will see how removing it from the shaft goes....

Good luck on your stuff

Thanks Bob, I'll keep that in mind. Interestingly, I found some online places with (almost) the correct bolt.

They have a GR 10.9 140mm bolt and a GR 8.8 120mm bolt. It's interesting to note the price difference ( $17 for the GR 10.9 and $3 for the GR 8.8 bolt! )

I emailed them to see if they have a 120 GR 10.9 bolt, that would be optimal.

If you don't mind, I'd like to stop over this weekend to see how your installs are going, especially the alternator removal! Which day are you going to be working on your car?

Jeff,

I plan to work on the car tomorrow as much as possible starting in the morning. Stop by anytime..

I was actually just installing my boost controller, and I could not see the hose from the turbos as it was tucked under the throttle body. So one thing lead to another and the alternator is almost out...

JEFF,

I figured out a 3 minute safe process for removing the fan and bearing from the alternator. It hit me after a few beers. It was SOOO easy, and nothing on the alternator is touched, so no possibility of messed up threads or anything.... So tomorrow the RS pulley will be on.

Yahoooooo (and I have no affiliation with this organization)....

Thanks for the info Bob... I'm sorry you had to take off your alternator to find out!

I'm kinda of bummed out, becauase it looked so sweet on Ben's car.

So, now that I have an extra RS pulley that I can't use, does any other rennlister want to buy it off me?
