Default 993 REAR HUB WEAR >?

Replaced Rear Driver Side Wheel bearing to Find wear on the Hub - Note see wear on end of Hub / spindle? in Pic
Wear is approximately on the last third of shaft
97 Carrera 148,000 Miles
How much of a concern is this?

I wish I knew the answer, but at 150K miles, and I think you can get a rear wheel hub for under $500, I'd replace it. Hopefully some smart people will chime in.

Was the spindle turning in the bearing? Seems some corrosion but mostly rotational wear. You probably can risk re-using it but personally I would not - find a used hub or buy a new one and then no worries after that. It's hard to tell the depth of the rotational marks, but I doubt if the strength is compromised, it a matter of fit into the bearing. Any slop and you will have problems.

^^^^^ as Mike stated. Was the bearing destroyed? How long did you notice possible problems?

Default HUB WARE

Hi Mike; I Would think Yes the bearing turned as the Bearing came apart when Pulled. Ball Bearings on the floor.

We r talkin maybe a couple of 1/1000 shaved off outside third of hub shaft / sppindle?

New Bearing Installed Now- Test Drive - I hear some clicking" click now.
No idea what it is Unless Both Rear Bearings are Gone?

Is it Possiblle that the New Bearing is Spinning / Grinding on or around the hub Spindle on the shaved down edge?
Defective NOS Bearing?

I was told by nu wrench that this Spindle effects the Press Fitment and I should get another hub - as u said to be safe.

Turns out Axle Nut was Loose after wrench installed New CV Boot and sent me out on Track for a DE
New Mechanic blames old.

Need to find Another Nu Mechanic UGH - thanks Mike
Thanks TJ

yes Bearing came apart - ball bearings all over the floor.

Prior to I was drivin a DE and wrench did not properly torque Left Rear Wheel Axle Nut after installing a New CV Boot. So I was driving a DE with Loose Axle Nut.
had to take an avoidance maouver on track so made a very aggressive Left turn - with loose axle nut.

After DE i heard an unusual scraping noises - drove the car a few weeks, maybe a 1,000 miles then left it in the garage -Pissed. May sell.

Two days ago Installed Nu Bearing on this (Left Rear) shaft as pictured.
Today I Got a clicking Noise.

Wondering if the ware on shaft is making New Bearing Grind and Spin on Shaft ?
I think I shall be prudent and get a Hub

Thanks TJ

Loose (improperly torqued axle nuts) will destroy bearings and hubs pretty quickly so I'd be asking the technician what value he set them at.

I've seen this a number of times over the years and its always sad since its due to human factors, not outright component failure.

Hi Steve

The Tech who installed the New Bearing stated 339 ft pounds.

The pic is the Hub which was Re-Installed

Now I have a clicking or scraping sound with New Bearing

How would someone go bak to a Mechanic and say You did this and now I want u to pay or ask for a Price Reduction on Labour>?

Having real issues here with Mechanics sizing up customers to see what they can "Get"

Example:

Your "Timing Chain cases are Leeking"
My Reply: Oh Really - Jeez- But there is No Oil on the Garage Floor'

Your Toe Links are worn Out
Really, A Mechanic Just Passed me for PCA Tech Inspection
(What Mechanic said was:
"Install New ones and they will be like what u have now in a week"
My Reply to New Mechanic / New Shop:
Are u sure?
Nu Mechanic REPLY: I Guess we Mechanics have different definitions for wear.
My Thoughts; Nice Try.

Seems if u do not know your car get ready for a Nu ride
happening Far Too Often - Seriously considering Selling
Then this happens UGH

Thanks for your reply Steve

That car sounds like a money pit. What'll you take for someone to relieve you of that headache? :-)

Hi TJ,

I'm VERY sorry to hear of your troubles. Sadly, while there are still a good number of competent, honest shops & technicians around, there are still a lot of them that are not and do just what you wrote which tars everyone in our industry with the same brush.

In some areas, its a challenge to find good, honest people who treat others the way they wish to be. in some cases, one needs to be willing to travel a bit to find such establishments and tap into that expertise.

Contact me directly and I'll see if I can get a referral for you that does good work and will treat you fairly. Do NOT give up!!!!!

That was in jest. Don't give up! Find an honest/competent wrench, and go start enjoying that thing as much as possible! This is exactly why I am glad I'm not subjected to the mercy of a mechanic. I may not be rational enough, when someone tries to stick it to me. Don't wanna have to explain to a judge, why that person now eats through a straw. :-)
