I ordered a replacement hood badge for my 993 and received one different to the badge currently on the car. The badge on the car has the Porsche lettering in black and the replacement has the lettering in gold. The supplier claims that the black lettering was only introduced from the Boxter/996 on. Is this correct? Has my 993 had the incorrect hood badge?

I think you were duped...but I'll have to check the badge when I see her in a couple hours...
This link is from the old Porsche site in the later 993 years, I think.

for under 30 euro delivered to my doarstep in
co.kerry within 2 days.
I have found a lot of websites are faster cheaper and more curious and reliable than a certain dealership in eire

Gert sent me my replacement, it was exactly like the one that was there. Wow, what a difference it made. The old one had a stud break off - it looked convex, I removed it, tried to "adjust" it, and busted it. It had all sorts of hairline cracks in it, too. The new one is shiny as a diamond ring. Makes a huge difference! It was only $40 or so. Maybe less, I don't remember.

993 has black lettering, emblem has a 993 part #
993.559.211.00
996/Boxster emblem is identical with part # 996.559.211.00
924/944/928/964 emblem has gold lettering and I think the part # is 901.559.210.09
Which just reminded me that the 911 was originally going to be designated 901 and indeed that was the project number. Anyone care to guess why it got changed at the last minute to 911????
Best to all.

Tim,
Great trivia quiz. Anything to do with Peugot (oh crap, how do you actually spell that name anyway? Why don't the Frenchies just speak English like normal people?)?

You got it in 1.
Watched a programme on TV several months ago about the early development of the 911.
The original designation was going to be 901 and when as you say Peugeot heard about it they kicked up an almighty stink. They had copyrighted all series of 3 digit numbers with zero in the middle for the European market. As part of the ensuing conversations Porsche agreed to change the 901 designation to 911, and Peugeot agreed to allow Porsche to use three digit designations with zero in the middle - but only for pure racing models.
But for that we would all be driving 901's!!

Tim,
I have the advantage of being a really old fart... I was there! Well... not THERE there, but around when all that was going on. My first 911 (1970 911E) used a "901" gearbox, with 1st gear out of the H pattern. Really slick for road racing, but a little stretched to contain 291 HP my old 2.7 was producing. Careful shifting made it last.

But I wish I did!
All the best.

You can get a silver hood badge but I believe it is an aftermarket part not Porsche. Several threads recently which gave suppliers in the US, doesn't help much until the search button reappears. Sorry.
