Steve,
Here is another option to consider (white with gray & oak woodwork). Click here:]<a href="http://gallery.rennlist.com/gallery/jdII" target="_blank">garage picture</a> Go to page 2 at top right
Also, Here's a link to the garage section of my website: <a href="http://personal.monad.net/~dgi/personal.mcttelecom.com/~dgi/index-page2.html" target="_blank">garage web page</a>
Good luck with your project. Personally, I find a nicely finished garage very enjoyable and a worthwhile expenditure.

Wow-
You guys really do up your garages! I didn't expect to receive the wealth of responses to a decision which initially didn't arouse much emotion on my part. After seeing that oak paneled garage wall with the track lighting and epoxy floor, I'm starting to think of spending more time and money on this endeaver!
The thing is, I do some detailing work in the garage over the winter, and needed a floor that could pretty much get trashed and not have to worry about it. Snow and mud sometimes sit on the floor of the garage as we both drive in the elements (no total garage queens at this home). I was initially thinking of not doing the floor at all and just leaving it bare cement, but now I'm open to other options. How much is it to do an epoxy floor for a basic 2 car garage and would my regular painter guy know what to do?
Thanks again!
Steve

It's advisable to have a pro do it if you want it to hold up to extreme abuse. My floor has been through several car restorations, extreme midwest heat and cold cycles, salt, snow and every chemical and solvent I could throw at it. Previous experiences with Griots, consumer and other do-it-your selfers were not successful in the long run. I contacted a firm that did "industrial coatings" for large businesses and they did my job on the side.

Steve, when I moved into the house about 18 months ago, I had the painter finish the garage. We used an almost white, semi gloss - I don't remember exactly what he called it. I could not afford to the floor too though, and intead of paint, I will go with industrial carpet like the picture earlier in the thread of the car on jackstands.
My reason for this reply and the most important part for me is this: My painter knew to paint the single row of cinderblocks at the base of the walls Flat black. It looks awesome and really makes the paint on the wall stand out. Then paint the two wood steps flat black to match.
Have fun and good luck with the car search.

Here's mine. White walls for maximum light reflection. Floor is AZRock Vinyl Composite Tile. I had epoxy paint before, applied by professional, but didn't hold up well.<a href="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/2PsInGar2-e.jpg" target="_blank">Garage</a> <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

Lee's right about AZRock. We have it in our gameroom & it's pretty bulletproof. This is what I had put down on my garage floor:

Good Luck! It's worth the effort.

This is a very timely thread. We just signed a contract to build a new house and I'm planning a Porsche corner in the garage. I would like to paint the floor but after reading some of the concerns with peeling under the tires and having to do an acid wash before painting I'm having second thoughts.
Has anyone had any luck with expoxies that don't require acid washing?
Do clear sealers have the same problems as paint?
Thanks

Buck,
I had the acid etching and epoxy paint performed by a professional. The paint held up for a year or so, then started peeling in spots. I was extremely pleased with the look, however, by year three, it was starting to look bad, so I had the contractor remove it. I am considering alternatives to paint and have narrowed it down to vinyl tile, as a possible alternate. Brad's suggestion about using an industrial floor specialist company sounds like the right way to go if using paint. I am going to explore this as well. Personally, I'm not sure about clear coatings.

I'm not an expert - I just play one on the Internet. I've heard references to the benefits of a vapor barrior underneath the concrete slab. Apparently one of the big reasons paint peels up from concrete is moisture coming up from underneath. So if you haven't begun construction, you have an opportunity to optimize your garage floor in a way most of us can only hope to someday!
I just found a terrific link on concrete floor prep:
