I feel like there's a race on Rennlist - which forum can make more fun of Johnny while claiming him as a slightly undesirable cousin. Looks like 996 forum "wins". Why does 996 forum always win?

I don't know, I think the 993 Forum does a better job of making fun of Johnny Irish. Some 996 and 997 members still take his ramblings seriously. I don't think anyone here does.

With the all the money he's wasted between his 996 and 997, he could have probably purchased a RB 993TT.

He should have just bought a 993 tip like he originally wanted to. Oh wait, they are overpriced for the market. By probably around $9k.

John is thrifty and wise. We could all learn a thing or two from him in our car acquisition/ownership journeys. He clearly made the most of these transactions, and I personally hope that he regales us with tales of his analysis and negotiations.

Think of how many Rolexes he could have purchased. What's the street value up to now, $30 a pop?

I have noticed that many boards are getting more "hard" edged these days.

The title caught my eye because I am thinking about getting rid of my '11 E350 Cab and the '95 C4 Cab once it gets done at the shop for a '07 997C4 Targa. As I have aged and gotten more creaks and pops in my back and hips I appreciate the tip tranny more as well. Wish the 997 I am looking at had one and this also explains my foray in MB land.

The 997C4 has the hips of the S series without the larger rims, brakes and engine. The hips really do remind me of the 993 *** end. And I do like bigger hips, LOL. Which is what I think the OP was referring to. And yes, he even notes that he is going to tweak some noses on this board on the 996 forum.

So flame away at me as well, I don't particularly care but before you do it should be noted I have made a wide run of p-cars on both the air and water-cooled sides, so I can give a fair comparison amongst the cars or at least as I remember them through the fog of time. I am also considering a 968 Cab if I see something that catches my eye.

Hello Chuck...and in all honesty I haven't driven a 991 and if I did I would probably like it a lot. My objection is a long standing one with the ever increasing size and complexity of cars. Audi A4s used to be tight little sport sedans. A VW GTI has inflated in size like popped corn. A 356 C coupe holds just about the same volume of people as a 991...plus the 356 has a spare tire and all the tools you need to make most repairs.

The official reasons given for Porsche going water cooled could all have been accomplished by weight reduction. The two valved engine rev'd just about as high as the 4 valve does.

Noise pollution? A stock 993 is quieter than a new sport exhaust.

Horsepower? Again, the cheapest horsepower is weight reduction...getting rid of all the electronic crap in the modern 911 would save an enormous amount of weight...sensors, monitors, regulators and motors...rain sensors? Really? Air Bags? All unneeded crap.

Fuel economy? I'm not getting any better mileage in my '06 997 than I got in my '93 964. And if you like hugging trees and want to do a real carbon footprint comparison, look at how much it takes to make a Tesla, not just drive it.

The only thing that kept me out of an older Porsche are (what I consider) inflated prices.

Back to the 991...handsome, yes. But I just cannot accept a car that drives me. I do not want a car that turns off the engine when I come to a stop in order to save a half a gram of fuel to satisfy some politician in Washington.

The automobile was always about freedom...go where you want when you want...and being able to take care of yourself on the road. A car without a spare...a car that needs a flatbed everytime a warning light comes on and the computers shut down your car...that car is not about freedom.

The simplicity of my 996 compared to my 997 was significant...to me. And the 993 held the same advantage over the 996. But none of what I say or think is going to stop the world from going in the direction it is going.

The 996 and 997 are the bargains in Porsche right now. I'm retired and probably would have been smarter to just keep the GTI but I decided to have one more Porsche in life...and so I am having fun. But I'm of the school that feels new does not always (and maybe rarely) mean better.

And yes you can find my new book on Amazon Kindle..."Man with Gun & The Sea of Ulysses."

Why not read the thread and some of the background before jumping to assumptions on posts here?

I think OP just meant that the 997 DOES have wider, 993 like, hips than the 996, not that the S is a wide body.
