Default Steering Wheel Restoration

I have a carbon fiber/leather steering wheel that I'd like restored. I looks like a stock four-spoke, but it has carbon fiber on the top and bottom (between the corresponding spokes). You can get a glimpse of it in my avatar.

The clear resin that encapsulates the carbon fiber has cracks, which I'd like brought back to "as new". I'd also like the leather replaced and brought back to "as new".

Any leads?

Macarbon.com can probably help. Not cheap though.

Thanks for the tip. I've read they don't do repair work, but I sent them a request anyway.

Does anyone have experience with Craft Customs out of Texas?

I'm interested in what you find out...I have a carbon 3 spoke with a tiny crack on the top. My ultimate plan is to, at some point, just get it all re-skinned with leather, but if Carsdream does carbon work, then that's an even better option... let me know what you find out!

Carsdream recovered my carbon 4 spoke wheel. I have a crack in the resin but they couldn't guarantee that when it could easily be fixed without affecting the carbon as they weren't sure how deep it was.

They said they could have a go but if the carbon is split they would need to re-carbon that part of the wheel which was going to cost around 450 euro (from memory) so in the end I choose not to get them to "try".

They did do a great job recovering the leather sections with perforated leather.

Marcus may also be able to repair the carbon.

It seems to me that if you are willing to experiment a little you could try spraying clear polyurethane on the plastic and see if it wicks into the cracks in the plastic causing them to be less apparent. If you sprayed a small amount into a metal or ceramic cup and use a metal pin as a dropper you could test this procedure on a small crack before committing to do the entire wheel. With headlights some use 2000 wet sandpaper to open up the plastic and remove oxidation and then spray clear polyurethane over yhe lens for a crystal clear finish.

Just a thought on a little experiment you may want to try if you you are at the point where you have little to loose.
Andy

Don't use plastic such as a syringe or other plastic to hold or deliver as it can contaminate the polyurethane and ruin its adhesion.

I've just installed a similar wheel except rootwood instead of carbon.
I know Dallas Steering Wheel does good recover work - not sure about repairing cracks.
Will look into it.

Just did a very quick search for wood steering wheel repair and found these folks in the Dallas area:
http://www.craftcustoms.com/pages/Lexus-restore.htm

Not sure if their processes would apply to carbon fiber - but it sure wouldn't hurt to inquire.

I had a crack in the carbon on mine and filled it with loctite 401 with a needle point applicator and held it in place with my finger nail for about 30 seconds . Totally disappeared to the point that now the wheel is installed I can`t find where the crack is.

401 is Cyanoacrylate with a thickener added - Super Glue.
Interesting.
