Default Reasonably Priced 1998 S Car on eBay

No affiliation with the seller, but I know a lot of you drool over the 993 S versions. This car seems very reasonable to me:

Looks nice.. I like the look of the c2s a lot too. Stocks did well this week, but unforutantely, not that well.

Bill, I think it'd be perfect for you.. I don't think you have enought p-cars in your garage yet..

Not for me - I am thinking 73 or earlier 911 or 912 - working my way back to a 356 some day.

I've inspected that car, it's quite nice, and a buddy of mine knows the original owner, if anyone is seriously interested in the car drop me a line.

Although price seems a bit high, I got my 98 S with a lot fewer miles and a lot more options for just a hair more than what they are asking for this one.

Just what the heck is going on around here when "buy it now" prices for pristine 98 C2S's are going for $44k? You've got to be kidding? I can't believe this car is going this cheap! I'm glad it doesn't have a black interior. I'd be REALLY pi$$ed (as I LOVE white with black, but I don't like beige interiors at all).

Someone's gonna get a steal of a deal. I just paid that much for a 96 C4S in January. I guess the bottom is starting to fall out? Oh well. Spilled milk is all it is.

Bottom falling out? Don't base a decision like that on one car that we know next-to-nothing about.....especially when there are 50+ cars that we know a lot more about that have sold for a lot more than $44K.

"If it seems too good to be true......it probably is".

If it strikes you as unusual, especially after all the research you have done into prices lately.....then there is probably more to the story than shows in the auction desription.

Still, I think Rob from NJ has the right idea about picking up a short-money 1995/1996 Cab for a 2nd 993.

I looked at that car at another dealer way back in June. It's been on the market a long time...the original asking price was $49k I believe.

In an effort "unscientifically" gauge the 993 market, I've been maintaining a database of 993's offered on eBay. As part of this I record model, year, mileage, BIN, and, when sold, sales price. Of the 400 vehicles I have tracked to date, only about 45 have actually sold. '95 Cabs are most "popular" going for an average of $32k and ~55k miles. Next up is '96 Carrera going for about the same with ~44k miles. Unfortunately, only 3 2CS's have been sold, so my data is incomplete.

I've also been tracking unsold cars and corresponding BINS where given. This has yielded some interesting results. People seem to be VERY optimistic about the value of their cars.

I will publish more info over the next few months when my sample size gets a little larger.

Well Bill, if you need to increase the size of your garage and your wine rack needs to come down, I'd be willing to take a few bottles off your hands...

So this is the difference between Bill and myself. I have a frig in the garage with cold beer and Bill has a winerack that covers a wall. I'd just keep breaking those Reidel glasses working on the cars if I switched to wine. Also, I need the empty beer bottles for brake bleeding. I am also very discriminating as I will only use green bottles for the bleeding process.

Bob,
do you have any Sierra Nevada in your frig?? (I am a chico grad)

In my search for a 993 TT my findings are that if the price is low
then something is wrong wit the car, almost always. Hi miles
in this case maybe the owner suspects something more is wrong.

I would suggest tracking car sales from sources other than Ebay. You aren't going to find the best cars selling through that site.

They are probably 50 examples on this forum alone of sales in the past 6 - 12 months that would augment your data.

Chuckie...that's pretty cool...I second (making more work for you) other sources such as this forum, and I would LOVE to see your data.

Do you track by options, and other data such as condition, been in an accident, etc.?

JPS -

I built a little MS Access database and store data such as eBay ID, auction start/end dates, BIN, sale price (if sold), status (sold, not sold, etc), year, model, and mileage. The only options I keep are tip vs. non tip and I make an effort to note duplicates (there is a dealer that lists the same unsold cars over and over - for months). I note condition, but only as a matter of inclusion into my sample (it's way too subjective to really include and I really only exclude outrageously modded or ugly cars - did you see that Bacardi heir disaster? It's not in my database). The models I look for are C2, C2 Cab, and C2S (sorry, no C4S or TT as I'm not in the market).

I have a couple of queries that list cars requiring update and I simply look 'em up by eBay ID and past in the sale/non sale info. Through the magic of Access reports, I have a few summary reports that spit back my figures. Not too bad. I was planning on posting some of my findings, but so very few 993's actually sell on eBay (~15%), I've only got info on like 45 cars out of the ~400 tracked so far. I have developed a non-sold report that looks at BIN's when used. Pretty interesting to see what people think these cars are worth.

I agree with DC above that eBay isn't the best place, but the data is easily extracted and it's consistent. It's just another tool for me when the time comes over the next 12 months to pull the trigger.

I'll follow up over the next few months, but I will certainly field questions in the interim.

Is it just me, or did they get a little 'fuller' since your avatar returned? Has your avatar had a spot of surgery...it would explain the absence...
