Default Pissed Off – Need to Vent – Failed Smog due to Open Air Box

Man this guy was an …hole. Either he doesn’t know what he’s talking about or he’s trying to pull one on me. Perhaps he’s just jealous of P car owners. I could sense a lot of anger from him.

I have removed the snorkel into the air box. This allows a little more air in and a little more sound out. He failed me due to a “modified PCV system.” The air box has nothing to do with the PCV system. He tried to explain it to me, but what he said made no sense.

There is no line item on the smog check form for anything to do with the air box. As far as I know, its “free” for modifications as far as smog is concerned. Kind of like a cat back muffler. Anything from the air filter back to the air inlet is free. I’ve passed smog checks with this removed before.

Look at these numbers: Hydrocarbons: max 85, average 21, measured 3. NO: max 695, average 150, measured 4. My car is about as clean as it gets.

Lesson Learned: Put your air box cover on for a smog check.

Errrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Hey Tom:

Looks to me like you ran into a fellow in a mid-life crisis or some kind of PMS,.....

You are correct though, that modification should not cause you any grief both from an inspection and emission POV.

I think you simply got a bad one,.........

So how much of a performance and sound gain do you get by removing the snorkel?

Did you tell the guy he was an a$$ or does this make passing the next smog test a bit difficult?

if not, ring him up & tell him he's a ****

Without the snorkel, and by adding a few holes, you have a factory motorsound airbox. The guy was a real dufus.

Johnfm, being a Brit (ex-Derbyshire/Notts/London) living in the US, your post made me laugh out loud. At least by calling him that, he won't have a clue what's being said..!

The snorkel isn't a factor in the motorsound option, is it? Still has the snorkle?

Tom,

I think that within the Cal smog program you can go to a "referee" facility and deal with the situation. Would take more of your time due to some technician idiot with a bad attitude, but at least you could get it resolved. Take the snorkle piece with you, and demonstrate that it has no tubing fittings on it, and therefore cannot be part of the PCV system.

Good luck,
Tom

Thanks everyone for letting me vent. I appreciate everyone confirming my opinion of the guy.

Steve – Thanks for confirming that the removed snorkel should pass the visual inspection.

Rick – It’s pretty much the same as drilling the air box. It’s just easier and reversible.

John - I couldn’t tell him he’s a **** (and yes I know what that means) as this place has a “pass or free retest” policy. I’ll go home, snap the snorkel in (all of about 30 seconds), and go back tomorrow during my lunch break and pass. In the meantime, I’m thinking of what I will tell him after I get the certificate and the data has been sent to the DMV…

Pete – exactly.

TMH – Yes, you are correct. However, it’s easier to put the snorkel back on and retest. If I continue to have problems with the guy, that’s what I’ll do.

Good question. Perhaps seeing the air filter through the opening in the air box made him look closer. At that point he could see the holes that the snorkel snaps into. Perhaps all he knew was that something was missing. Why he chalked it up to PCV I don't know.

Hey Tom,

If you don't pass smog.....
Do not pass go, do not collect $200, GO Directly to the Referee station.
I know you don't have the same problem that I do (OBD) but if your having a hard time with the station the referee should be your first stop.

Also, I'm not sure about this, but I was told that even if your car is running clean and perfect and you fail smog more than X number of times (I'm not sure how many times) you risk having your car classified as a
GROSS POLLUTOR. If this should happen, it's a huge uphill battle to have the car passed and might cause you a good deal of grief and $$$$.

good luck.. and if you need the # for the referee station, do a search for my old post:
California Emissions - $8.25

tom--------->
i only hope you went to one of the "if you don't pass - you don't pay" places. the guy is an idiot! i passed early this year with my modified air box (snorkel-off & plug out) with no problems. i think you got exactly what you said... an angry, jealous ******!!!

thanks for the tip though... i may listen just to be safe next time to the smog station. hope all works out for you next go round.

rich

oh... & here's to ******* who will never own a p-car!!!
