Post Question on using my V1

I recently bought my very first radar detector - the V1. I like it so far, and feel pretty comfortable with it. Most of the fast driving I do is early morning, or late evening, when there's little traffic. I also stay on not-so-busy roads, so the occasional police I run into are just running around with their radar on (no laser, or instant on "traps")
My question, though, is that every once in a while I'll be going through town, and pass a police car hidden in the bushes (places that have been speed traps before), but haven't gotten a signal. I've even turned around several times, to make another pass; even following other cars (to try and catch a stray signal), but still no signal. In Lake Mary, the police are notoriously bad, so its hard for me to believe that they are just napping. Can anybody shed any light on this for me?

Thanks!
David

Could be side laser, or they are just using instant on and you weren't in range. Did the open a Krispy Kreme recently

Drive by them at 80 MPH, and see if you get a signal THEN. Bet you will!!!!

Like others say, could be instant-on or laser. Other possibility is what local PA use; fancy stopwatch measuring time to cross between two points - no radar/laser at all (only state cops can use radar, and laser ain't allowed at all).

If you know that they are there you don't need the V1 - its for when you don't know they are there! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

I have no problem catching CHP signals (Ka band) whether they're behind bushes, billboards, overpass, or donut shop.

Here in the Bay Area, you could never count on CHP to have their radar on all the time. Lately, I've noticed them using instant on much more than before. Many times, I pass them sitting on the side without picking up anything on the V1. If you want to get their attention, try going a little faster!

Just remember - your V1 is only good when they actually turn on their radar guns.

Red face

Though this may not be your problem, it is worth relating. Three years ago I was out for a casual drive in town with my wife. We have several 6-lane higways in town with 35 mph speed limits. On one, I was stopped with radar by the local police for doing 65. My V1 did not even chirp. The officer was very cooperative after he wrote me up. He pulled his cruiser such that the radar directly faced my 993. He fired it multiple times to which the V1 did not respond. I sent it to Valentine with this explanation. I got it back in 3 weeks without a remark or bill from Valentine. I did not know if it was indeed defective and repaired. It works fine at this time (except for instant-on and laser).

Guys,

Are there differences in these detectors in that sense that cops detect that you have it in your car or not?

Friend of mine uses these things in Finland and since they're illegal there (and cops have detector detectors) he'd like to buy one that cops wouldn't detect.

Freeman,
Did you notice the V1 working before your ticket? Mine has shown activity before and after the two times above, so it seems like its working. I tried following other cars in the times above, just to test the thing out. In the manual, it says you should be able to pick up on whats being shot at the car in front of you in terms on instant-on, or laser.

Mr. Edwards-

It worked great in the days before. What can I say but it works great now? I still get tickets with Instant on and laser but not K or X band.

Oh, BTW Mr. Edwards, I have a very humorous story regarding the V1.

I attended a funeral for a 15 year old in Atlanta. When I left the service at the cemetary I was predictably in thought on I285. There, a county-mounty was standing in a very precarious part of the interstate with an instant-on and "got me". At the time my V1 went off I looked to my right and saw a BMW 3-series pass me. The mounty wrote me up for 75 in a 60. I asked him if he clocked the BMW and he said "yes". I asked how fast the BMW was moving when he passed me and he said "70". Had I had the time to drive 250 miles to court I would have contested but it would have cost me more than the fine.

Life is not fair and the V1 does not help.
