Default need suggestions on a good engine oil with adequate ZDDP

see- below

looking for a 15w50 oil - not the ones with "API SM/SL"

Suggestions?

Or, just add a bottle of ZDDP to a newer oil?

To quote Steve Weiner in an old thread:

"My only point in offering that link is to say that oil formulations have (are) changed due to the new API SM rating and the EPA-mandated rules on cat life. This resulted in drastically reduced levels of ZDDP which is NOT a good thing.

The bottom line is that if the bottle has "API SM/SL" on it, its NOT the same good stuff as you've been using.

Some the older thread say Mobil 1 has cut back on the zinc.

V Twin oil (for motorcycles)? OK for PCAR since air cooled also - more lubricants?

They took it out of other formulations due to poisoning of cats, but since motorcycles have not had cats, they have not taken it out yet.

I cannot find any info on a Harley warranty, so the bike manufacturers probably do not have to warranty the cats for 100,000 miles like cars, so ZDDP is likely not an issue yet for poisoning cats. I did find a Honda Warranty and it is only for one year.

Brad Penn Racing 15W40.

Looks like this is a "partially" synthetic oil with ZZDP

OK with these engines vs. "full" synthetic like Mobil 1?

Redline 10W-40 has great levels of ZDDP the last time I checked. I use it in all of my cars and have had Blackstone check the oil. The life of the oil and additives is remarkable. Brant Giere (bgiere) has a fair bit of data on the oil for his 964 Cup car.

been running redline 15W50 for years; and just bought a case of their 10W60 which is going in at next oil change. ZDDP levels are 1200 for their "blue label" oils. VI and HTHS values are also excellent.

I use Mobil I brand. On their web site it lists the ZDDP levels for each of their multi-grade oils. Some have a lot some just a little pick the one that suits you.
Here is an old chart, it my need to be updated.

Brad Penn for me!!! Been using it for 70+K miles. My cam looked perfect the last time I saw them while changing out some lifters.

I have no problem with pouring in a quart or two of Mobil 1 and plain dino oil bought at a gas station. What is more important is the oil weight.

Here is the current Mobil-1 chart for 2014 ... 15W-50 is designed for our 993 engines with 1200-1300 ZDDP.
