Lack of use is likely the biggest culprit in this case. Tires contain a wax compound that prevents this type of rot. It works it's way to the surface in a process call "blooming" via flexing, heat build etc up while in use. Lack of use = no protective wax working it's way to the surface to prevent the degradation.

Easy fix for your next set, drive your 993 and enjoy it!!

Keith,
I agree wholeheartedly...But if one were to wad up the 993 in the biggest way; instantaneously the price of tires and life become a moot point, so to speak. (tongue in cheek)

How is the safety of driving with those tires on even a question in your mind?
Like Ed said; I cant believe anyone would need to post a question on those tires...

I came close to totaling my car because of old tires. Get less expensive ones and replace them more often if car isn't driven much. It's cheap insurance.

Just looking at this and the question, bothers me about all of the drivers you see on the road with cars that have no right to be out there. This guy may just not be sure and wanted reassurance that it's VERY dangerous to drive with those. But I see crap on the road all of the time. They get cited for unsafe vehicles and the moronic judges dismiss it after they believe their BS harship stories. These people jeopardize others as well as there own lives. Driving on the doughnut spare for months on end. Mutants, they're everywhere.

My car came with old, mismatched tires - it was SPOOKY to drive.

I'm wondering if many of us are in the situation that our tires will age out before they wear out given the fact that many of these cars are used as occasional/weekend cars vs. daily drivers? Given that I'm averaging 3k miles per year on mine, I'm certain I'll be replacing them based on age, not them wearing out.
