C4 to C2 Converstion Question
So, prior owner converted my C4S to two wheel drive, though he kept all of the AWD parts. I want to convert it back to AWD, but I had a mechanic look at it and he said that there had been some welding done in the transmission tunnel to do the conversion. Has anyone done this before and do you know what would have been welded? I did not get a clear picture from my mechanic.

A support bracket for the G64 transmission I would think. Most people these days use a bolt-on bracket from FD Motorsports instead of welding.
But may I ask why you would want to convert it to AWD?

I think that sounds right. It doesn't sound like that would be a big deal to cut out.
On AWD conversion, I just feel like a C4S should have its AWD. I have made improvements to my car by installing Porsche RS parts and other period correct options where desirable, but I its badged a C4S so it seems it should be AWD.
However, I am open to being talked out of it . . . .

The welding the mechanic is referring to is the shifter box which is required to convert from
AWD to 2WD , also the torque tube and coupler for the front differential are either removed
and or disconnected.

And I have the torque tube, differential, and coupler. I wish I knew how big a job it would be to cut the welding on the shifter box. My mechanic could only say time and materials.

I wouldn't sweat it, unless your planned use is into the low traction situations where AWD can be desirable. If foul(est) weather driving is a concern, I'd concentrate on tire choice for those conditions.

Keep the extra 200 lbs. in storage. I had a C4S and now a C2. Much prefer the Carrera. A lot more tossable and fun to drive. If the badge on your deck lid is your problem, some dental floss and Goo-Gone can take care of it

Putting the car back to how it was meant to be is cool and I respect that! If it's a 4S, and you want the AWD back; do it.
From a weight perspective you would never know the difference in feel between a 2WD vs AWD 993. This argument is more valid to those trying to shave off a thousandth of a second at the track. I like the tiny bit of extra confidence I have with my 4S in slick conditions. I also love how it squats out of corners at WOT!
