Default Re-Gear 95 C4

Hi all,

I am planning a re-gear to go along with my MWF and RS Clutch. I plan to use the 997 GT3 gears 1-5 and 996 GT3 6th. The ratios are slightly shorter than G21 gearing but not by much.

I have included the g20 stock gearing and the proposed gearing side by side here so you can see the difference.

I hate to rain on your regear party ... but I've heard it's not possible to use these 996 and 997 GT3 gears in a 993 G50 transmission. I entertained the same notion at one point. It's possible I'm mistaken, though ...

I would contact Matt Monson at Guard Transmission.

I think that shaft diameter of the 3-4 and 5-6 gear shafts is larger for GT3. GT gears does make adapters so that their gear sets can adapt to G50. Perhaps these would also work with Porsche GT3 gears.

I'd ask Steve Weiner from Rennsport Systems.

Thanks for the info all!

I will follow up the leads. If this is workable, the gears are much more reasonably priced/easily available with the added bonus of being very slightly shorter than g21 (which is exactly what I want based on my daily drive routine).

Thanks again! I will update as I know more.

My C2 has been regeared by PO. It's incredible difference. Just added Fister 3 today and the combo is incredible through the foothills of Colorado.

I took the plunge and was able to purchase a refreshed Motorsports gearbox for my 98 993. I cannot tell you properly how wonderful this move was. It transformed the entire personality of the car. The OEM long gearing in the original tranny allowed me to use only the first 2 or 3 gears in town. With the Motorsports close ratio box, I now use the first four gears running around in town. The ratios are so well spaced that I can easily keep the engine in the power band. It gives your butt meter the feeling that you have added about 50 hp to your engine. Truly a wonderful feel to the car.

Steve Weiner would be my choice as the go to guy for any regearing project. He knows these gearboxes so well, that he can set up yours very nicely. I had talked to Steve about doing a regearing, but then ran into the Motorsports tranny. When discussing it with Steve, he recommended getting the Motorsports rather than doing a regearing of my trans.

So, talk to Steve. You can pretty much bank what he tells you.

FWIW, there a bunch of other threads you should peruse:

Awesome BillV thread

My Own (BillV made a purdy graphs for my ratios)

Also, being a C4 means that you will not have a 1st gear shaft that is splined for an interchangeable 2nd gear. Best would be to source one of those (there were a few that came up for sale a while back) used to save $.

I may be wrong, but I believe that the same issue regarding the 1 and 2 gears applies to all 2WD cars as well. The 1 and 2 gears are fixed to a common shaft and are non-changeable. If you have to replace either gear, you are forced to purchase both gears on a common shaft.

As an upgrade, you can purchase separate gears and shafts to resolve this issue. However, I believe the hardware to effect that change carries a pretty stiff cost of approximately $1500.

Up until early/mid 1995 2WD cars did have the 1st/2nd gear shaft with only 1st machined on. There are no clear VIN #'s / dates that will determine this, just whatever parts were on hand when the transmissions were built. By end of 1995 they were all 1st and 2nd machined onto the shaft (and all of the AWD boxes were seemingly this way as well).

You can tell if 2nd gear is loose if you look at the transmission serial number.

Check with Matt at Guards, but I believe when I discussed a mild regear with him,we ended up using 3rd and 4th from a 996 Cup.

Just a thought,

Tony, please feel free to store your car at my place. Just make sure you give me two weeks notice before coming to get it. (Should be able to re and re a couple transmissions in that time )
