993 vague steering
#16
RS tie rods really helped. Of course the standards were 18 years old so the rubber has had it's best time but the feeling is way sharper and now feels like a sportscar!
When orientating myself 5 years ago I tried some 964's and 993's. The front of 964's is gorgeous but the driving experience not that exciting. Steering was sharp but did not challenge the driver to play a little where the 993 is more easy to play with like drifting. What struck me more was that the 964 has not that much grunt below 4500 rpm. Then I drove a low mileage 993 with varioram and short ratio gearbox (MJ 96) and this felt way more responsive also taken into account the 6 speed gearbox. I didn't want to go the route of upgrading the 964 engine so I opted for the 993 which sometimes felt to much GT. Now with the revised/updated suspension in combination with the varioram engine, short ration gearbox, 18 inch hollow spokes and no weight increasing options it really wheels like a sportscar.

The steering on my 964 is super dead and loose on center. I can lightly move it from side-to-side while driving with no actual movement of the car. Compare my wife's 3 series, it totally sucks.
Everything is new/refreshed/poly/good working order (including rubber coupler in steering column)/caster is maxed/camber is -1.8/tires are 225 BFG Rivals, etc. Even when the tires are in the air, light movement on center translates to no movement of the steering. I suspect I have a loose/lazy rack.

Anther data point,...
We are finding more and more degraded steering rack bushings, allowing the rack to move laterally with steering input. Now we replace them with a harder product that improves steering response.
