Anybody have a recommend on getting a CD Changer checked/repaired, other than by Dealer. Bought a used 96 and can't get it to power up. Rest of radio works fine. And yes, I have gone thru the manual and made sure I haven't overlooked anything. Are they worth spending money on, history of problems, etc?
I am sure you can get it checked from someone other than the dealer. However, you did not mention which unit you have.
If it came down to it, I could even send you my changer (Porsche CDC), that is if you just wanted to plug in another to test & see if it works.
As for reliability. I know that a lot of Porsche CD1 head units were replaced under warrantee for defects. I have not heard much about defects w/ the changers though.
Right after I bought my car with 82k miles, the factory changer crapped out on me. I went to a car audio place (no need to go to the dealer) and they charge a flat fee of $200 to fix all changers. At this point I thought long and hard about usage patterns etc... and decided to scrap the changer altogether (more room in the trunk) and install an aftermarket cd player in the dash. I have not looked back. I was never fond of changers in trunks as users tend to not change out discs and I know I would have been one of them. So for $200 more than fixing the changer, I got a cool looking and well working Nakamichi cd player and love it. Sure I have a small case to lug a few (20 or so) cds around, but they seem to fit fine in the backseat where nothing else can.
Thanks for info guys. I like EJ's idea of scrapping for an in dash unit. Every time I get in wife's BMW (changer in the trunk)it's the same Shania or Dixie Chicks that's been playing for the last year! Her musical taste have changed, but not her CDs in the trunk.
If you decide to stick with the trunk-mounted changer, you may want to consider that the cable from the head unit in the car to the trunk-mounted CD changer may be faulty.
My changer stopped working a few months ago, and the dealer diagnosed a faulty cable. Replacing it solved the problem.
