Default Valve cover gasket service

Hey guys, I'm in the midst of doing a major service on my car. I've already dropped the motor last week to install a clutch/LFW and have a big list of "while I'm in theres" on the go. One of the items on my list is to change out all 4 valve cover gaskets, but only one valve cover is leaking/sweating. Should I replace them all since I'm in there? Or "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...

What would you do?

I've got all the parts needed to replace lower gaskets in brand new condition for a NA 993. Let me know by PM if you want to strike a deal.

Since the engine is out I'd replace them all. Also chain cover gaskets, which is the source of the oil leak on my car and requires dropping the engine to address it.

boman one thing not many note when changing the valve covers the dowels are not suppose to spin in the valve cover, if they do then you will have leaks later even with new replacement gaskets and new bolts correctly torqued. Just a quick fyi to note when looking over your existing valve covers. the silver dowels are to be pressed into the cover and not move. I replaced a gasket once and Had leaks reoccur - boy was I not impressed.

Thanks, I got all of my parts before the drop happened! Chain cover gaskets and hardware are getting replaced too! My one side has a weep, but after reading the nightmare/impossibility of changing them with the engine in the car; I'm doing both for sure.

Thanks Lopro!! Great advice, I will make sure to inspect them when I clean them!

I hope you're doing chain cover gaskets as well?

^^^^What he said.

Do EVERYTHING you can with the motor out...won't be any easier with the engine in...PS belt, SAI port cleaning, SAI valve, valve covers, chain covers, plugs, wires, etc, etc, etc. See flatsixforme's EPIC journey for whatever I am missing in the list.

Now, I'm going to only do lowers (which are leaking) and leave uppers alone because I'm not dropping the motor. And as Ed mentions, I need chain covers (ugh...) which is big time PITA with the motor in the car. Not looking forward to that...

Yes, had to ask Ed, why not? I had everything to do all 4 covers. Just wanted to double check ~ I remember reading in a thread to leave them if they're not leaking. But now looking back it was completely in context of the engine being in the car...

Yes. Both sides with hardware are being done next. Just finished the 4 valve covers tonight using @Bruce7's DIY..

Thanks for the links guys, I went through these threads in the planning stages before I ordered parts and the car was apart! Invaluable info and lists. My list is pretty long and I think I have everything covered!

Though, new discovery that wasn't planned and I'll need parts for is my drippy Varioram flap in the intake manifold... https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-manifold.html
