Here we go again. Blah blah blah... Unless you're selling it the "value" hasn't changed. I "lost" thousands in the market yesterday, but I didn't sell. Did I really "lose" the money, yet?

I don't see much of a bubble for the 964/993 air-cooled market, particularly for the <$80k cars, as I do think they have been undervalued for some time. For the most part, you can buy them today for less than what they sold for new, in today's dollars. Also have to take into account the fact that collectors will pay a premium over an enthusiast to store the car just for future re-sale.

No-but there is no different read here than say someone watching the market for investments, per your example. If you were thinking of selling, its certainly good to be educated and have some idea of where you are, value wise.

IMO its certainly a bubble at least for the 50K+ mile examples. Do you realize that you can now have an 09 C4S for less money than a 993 C4S? I dont know but really i dont see the value unless you are going to collect and put it in a museum or something. Still the factory made thousands of 993's with most still in circulation, so IMO the collectable aspect will certainly feed the bubble for the limited editions, but I just dont see it for the average 993/964. There is a guy that is selling a 50K mile 964 convertible with horrible chrome twist wheels for 66k!!! I mean really.... Ultimately the market will decide indeed, but I feel that the bubble will burst sooner than later for the standard 993/964

It's great to see the values of all of the cars air-cooled rise both in popularity as well as in value. The recent enthusiasm in sales and sales prices illustrates how a well cared for car can retain it's value even when they're driven and enjoyed. As long as a car with modifications are easily reversible, they should hold their value nicely. Sadly over time attrition will remove cars from the inventory (Recent San Diego repair shop fire).

It is intriguing to own a car that at the very least is no longer depreciating.

It'll be a shame if enthusiast's are priced-out of the market.

Another one? Only thing I found down there was what seemed to be a 997 burned in a condo fire.

Hell, we've had two 993 widebodies damaged severely in the past month, just with guys here.

I don't think the 993 world will come close to where the longhoods and 2.7L era cars have gone, since there is next to zero demand to hack them into "updated" cars, or use them as basis for light or full duty track/race cars.

But if people keep desiring them, relative to the later 911s, there will be less can kicking on the repair side.

(Got a kick out of Keith Martin talking about how the 3.6L cars are so complicated, what with their turbos and AWD. Uh huh. What, exactly, is that production? Certainly a minority.)

Been that way for most of my adult lifetime.

Remember, in the early '80s you could have your pick of good 356 Speedsters for $10K. A '73 RS for double that. Even in '95 a friend bought a '73 RS that was a quasi-lightweight with ~75K km on the clock for $25K. Didn't need a damn thing, though it was a GP White repaint on a Sepia Brown car.

Even a ratty Speedster wasn't much more than a $5K car, of which I could have bought several from customers. (Let alone early T6 normal Coupes. Ugh.) Sadly, the cost to restore to that $10K standard would have been $7-8K in parts, plus hundreds of hours of labor.

Rinse and repeat for the SC/Carrera's today.

I think they are being priced out of the market. I bought my first Porsche, a 911SC about 12 years ago (since sold). I was looking for a nice driver that needed just a little work but that I could drive the **** out of and enjoy. At my income level at the time it was still do-able. I saved, paid cash and picked it up for $12,700. There were quite a few to choose from in my search, many were much nicer but I didn't want a concours car. I wanted a nice driver.

There will be enthusiasts who really want only an air cooled car and aren't interested in the water cooled stuff, great cars that they may be. For them the door is closing - that sucks.

GLHS? I always wanted a Shelby CSX.

I know of a 993 c4s and a tt crashed in Vancouver in the past few months. They will be repaired though.

I like how the 993 owners comment that these cars are keepers. I agree and want to keep mine for life.

A good friend of mine had one of those back in the late 90s, had it signed by Carroll himself. I think he may still have it. We took it out to Willow Springs a few times, that thing was pretty quick.

MODS

Please make a separate section for all valuation and fictitious appreciation threads. Many of us don't really give a fu€k what some wannabe journalist thinks of the investment potential of radiator-less junk...
