Default any experienced tip owners?

Hello all, it has been 6 months with my tip, and although I like it, I feel the car may have more to offer as a manual.
I feel it is a bit sluggish off the line, even in 1st. I was wondering if there is any way to defeat the automatic 1st gear upshift. I realize it is programmed to avoid me redlining, but I would prefer a few hundred rpm when I want it. I was wondering if I held the shifter to the downshift spot, if that would prevent the upshift?

I have considered converting it to manual as I have done this on many different cars in the past with great success, but on this, the cost makes no sense. I figured the conversion, will cost me approx 14k. That is to do it properly, and that is wrenching it myself. Then there is reduced future value, which brings the cost even higher. So buying a manual and selling the tip make sense, even though I love my car otherwise.

I have read a lot on the subject, but I am sure there is more. Does anyone who has a tip have any driving techniques that may help me better appreciate the tip for what it is?

I did not get an owners manual with the car, so if there are driving tips in it, I am not aware of them. I currently use the manual shift mode for most situations once the oil is up to temp.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Happy 4th!!!!!

Rich

Best advice I can think of is to sell it and get the manual. I don't know if you can pull the negative battery connection for longer than an hour and reset the learned behavior of the auto. I know some newer vehicles are done that way. Never owned a tiptronic but it's free and easy, may be worth a try.

It kind of sounds like you'd prefer a manual over the Tip. If so, you'll be $$$'s ahead selling the Tip and buying a manual vs. converting.

I enjoy my Tip and even track the car several times/yr. However, there's no question a Tip takes away a lot of the "guts" of a 993 and I'm not sure there's any real way to economically improve Tip performance. So you may just have to make a choice. Some people like their Tips while others wouldn't be caught dead in one. I happen to like mine but I can't pretend it's something it's not. I NEVER drive it in automatic mode. In automatic mode it's a slug.

Regarding overriding the upshift from 1st, I've found that in "manual" mode when I floor it, it seems to pretty much shift into 2nd just about at redline anyway. I can't imagine wanting to leave it in 1st longer. I find 1st and 2nd offers decent performance, but acceleration in 3rd and 4th is pretty weak. 993 Tips really needed a 5 speed.

Cheers.

I've had my 97 tip S since December. I hear what you are saying and my thoughts are... 1. It's not a drag car. Though some more flexibility with gear play and some torque would be fun. 2. It's still more car than a novice (me) can drive fast at the limit. I drive it occasionally at H2R in San Marcos, TX. It's a fast car and it has enough juice to go sideways or kick out the tail at 4500 and above on any corner. 3. If you like the tip most of the time and just want more power, install a super charger. 4. There is not substitute for a perfect shift out of a corner. ;-)

hi there...I DD my Targa w/ Tip always in manual mode...I used to have a C2S w/ manual tranny that I drove once a week...the manual def adds a kick to driving the 993...I also thot about converting the tip to a manual but the cost/benefit didn't make sense...my dream is to one day buy a 993TT to rid of torque envy...

Thank you all for the great replies. I am glad to see that my perception is in line with what others think.

The reason I want to hold first longer is mine seems to shift 200 RPM too low. It is still pulling hard when it shifts, and the gear change drops it off its sweet spot. I realize I am flirting with a popped motor, but that really doesn't scare me too much either.
Yes, 1 more gear to lessen the spread would be perfect. If it had 5, I would probably revel it the tip.

I have been searching for a reasonable replacement and may have found it ( right here) but I love everything else about my car. I have grown to trust it, and I hate to let it go, but based on my math, I am basically throwing out 12-16k by converting it, and that does not include my time.

I guess it is what it is, although going sideways at 4500 Revs does sound fun. I have not yet got it to do that. Perhaps if I did.........

Thanks guys

Rich

For most, including me, tips are a compromise between pure driving experience and convenience. I drive my car exclusively in manual using the steering wheel toggles, and yes, there are times where I definately miss the third peddle. Overall though, it provides a very nice balance.
