I'm looking at 2 cars - both silver C4 cabs. The 96 has 60K miles and the 95 has 50K. They are both $35K. All other things being equal, I assume the 96 is a much better deal, correct?

I'd say it's a toss up. 10k miles/yr is pretty high for a 993.

95's are easier to chip- cheaper-

varioram (sp) on 96, not 95, something like 10 or 12 hp gain.
I'm sure there are other things and I could be wrong on these things?
I'm in the same boat, looking for one that is. I've pretty much decided on a 95. Just have to get my garage in order. Good luck

Condition, service history, and condition are the only factors to be considered. The mileage difference is inconsquential. The difference in the "improvements' of the 96 over the 95 are small, and mostly summed up by VarioRam. On the 95s side, however, is a much easier ECU to upgrade.

Drive them both and see which one feels better, and which one is supported by better records. That's the better deal.

60k miles on a 96 or 50K miles on a 95 are both low mileage cars. These cars are getting close to 8 and 9 years old. That mileage is fine, and may actually be preferred over a 10K mile garage queen.

The basket-handle is on all the cabs. The 96+ coupes went with the roof spoiler.

Seems to me that the 96 is a slightly better deal, but not much. After running some regressions on mileage versus asking price for some models, generally the price drops from $0.20 to $0.25 per mile. Thus the 10,000 mile difference is worth about $2200 which seems to be a bit less than the premium people are paying for 96 models. I'll have to check out the data tonight. All things being equal, I'd go for the one that looks like it's had a more pampered life.

Did you agree with my assessment that the 95 needs a new clutch?

Thats what I thought everyone would say. The 96 is one owner versus 3 and appears to be better taken care of. Thanks.

Both are cabs. Both will have the basket handle.



I would opt for the OBDI car (the 95), assuming the PPI was fine.

Also, I do not intend to chip the car so OBDI probably isn't a big plus to me. Eric, I'm going to rule out the car that you warned me about. I haven't even looked at it.

Do a search on the carbon build-up problem that occurs with OBDII cars to help inform yourself on the OBDI vs. OBDII difference. (I'm sure the OBDI's are also susceptible carbon build up but it doesn't set the Check Engine Light off)

FYI, late MY 95 coupes have the roof spoiler third brake light and not the basket handle.

Be sure to investigate the wiring harness recall on the '95.

I don't think the wiring harness recall should be a factor in the decision. Either its beeen fixed or it hasn't. If it hasn't, its a warranty replacement, so there is no cost. Just be sure it gets done. BTW, I believe that some 96s are also affected by this recall (my 96 TT, for example).

I just went through an extensive 4-6 week search for a 95-96 cab and surprised myself. From just reading the threads on this site for over a year I was almost anti-'95. I thought the varioram would make a big difference and even though I noticed a slight difference at about 5500 rpm's, was very impressed by the '95. I think there is a lot to be said for possibly avoiding the carbon build-up as well as getting a new wiring harness(if it's not already done).

In talking to some '95 owners many were waiting until harness went bad and planned on getting other items fixed at the same time. The school of thought was that once the engine was pulled under warranty, maybe the shop would work with them on the labor price.

Any year, you can't go wrong IMO. If you are under a little of a budget constraint like my friend, then the '95 might just be the ticket.
