Help! A/C evaporator expired = $2600?!
My local dealer claims to have located the fault in my A/C to an expired evaporator and has quoted $2600 for the repair (parts approx $940 + 18 hours of labor).
What is the general experience of fellow Rennlisters with this repair? I know that it is a major job that requires disassembling the dash and removing the fuel tank etc. But I'd be mighty happy to find a less exorbitant solution.Ofcourse, this would happen in the middle of a humid New Jersey summer where A/C pretty much is indispensable.
Is replacing the evaporator within the realms of a semi-capable DIY'er, or should this one be left to the pros?
Thank you,
Reuben

I think there is an evaporator on ebay right now if that helps or maybe an accumulator - I just glanced over it - sorry to here of your troubles - I know it's not the mod you had in mind.

I have my evaporator that I pulled from my 993 if you need one. I can email pics.
BTW, my car came orginally from Princeton as well, Ray Catina Porsche.

Reuben,
Hi. I pulled the AC unit since I'm building up my car as a RS spec. The compressor weighted 15# and the evaportor weighted the same. The lines are minimal weight so with fluid I would say about 35# saved. I will email you some pics when I get home in a couple of hours.
Good luck.

Craig,
I've tried to find an independent specialist in my area but nobdy is keen to take on this project.
How much are they quoting you for the parts? I have found several OEM evaporators for arund $439, somewhat less than the $650 the dealer is quoting me.
Good luck with your repair. - let me know what you decide to do. It must be even hotter in Texas sans A/C than it is here in New Jersey!
