Default 70% of all Porsches built still on the road

http://www.carpages.ca/blog/2010/12/...l-on-the-road/

Apologies is someone already posted this...

But if so, where are they all? Tucked away in collector's garages?

It's called falling for statistics BS. More cars are produced every new year than previous years. All car manufacturers can claim this or at an even higher rate.

I'd think the actual number to be higher, with Porsche.

They won't be able to make that claim for too much longer when all those Cayennes and Panameras (the biggest sellers) start heading to the scrap yard.

What I wonder is, where are all the 993's? Where I live in Lugano, I see regularly only a red Targa. I see a green 964 and a silver 930 about. For that matter, hardly ever see any 996's either. Just see 997s, 998s and 991s. Lots of them. But there used to be lots of 993s and 964s, 911SC's, 930's... Where are they???

As Chu says, it is a marketing ploy for people who don't understand statistics (as are many ad campaigns for many products).

There are many newer Porsches made than older models. Of course, nearly 100% of the cars sold in 2013 and 2014 are on the road. Now, start regressing backwards. Maybe 99.9% of 2012s, 99.8% of 2011s, etc.

So, you could have maybe 20% of 1980 Porches on the road and 10% of 1970s' era ones, and still have an overall 70% of ALL Porches sold on the road. I think Subaru makes a similar claim, but uses a number like 80%.

With the exception maybe of the Yugo, virtually any car maker should easily be able to support this same statistic, or even better numbers.

To be of any value, they would need to tell you what percent of cars, by year, are on the road. Of course, no manufacturer will ever report this.

My point is simply where are the older models? In Switzerland I rarely see any older model. Do you guys in the States see older models fairly often? They seem to have disappeared here...

like others said it's numbers game...
There were 24k 993 sold in US over 4 years, which was probably highest number compared to previous 911s. There were 54k 997 sold over 6 years. I'm sure it's a similar picture world wide.

Also, people who have them don't drive them that much hence you don't see them on the roads that much.

While I don't see older Porsches or 993s that often either in New Jersey/New York, when we go for local drives we can have a hand full of 993s (10 or so). When I went to DE there were 3 993s and a few older 911s. When I went to autoX, there was one 993, one '73 911 and 3-4 964s out of 40-50 Porsches. So they are out there just not used like DDs.

They didn't disappear, they're tucked away in garages or, increasingly, hidden in "collections". I grew up in SoCal. Even in the 80's I remember seeing early 911s parked on the street and the occasional 356 out and about in city traffic. All those 356s didn't vanish, just vanished from view. As recently as ten years ago while living in Prescott, AZ I used to see two different longhood early 911s running around town routinely, one even parked outside night after night.

It's sad but with the crazy market for Porsches, 911SCs, 3.2s, 964s and 993s are all going to get squirreled away in collections long before they would ordinarily.

In SoCal, we see a lot of air-cooled 911's. I still see 993's that I've never seen regularly, and often SC's and 80's Carreras. Longhoods, less so-here and there on weekends.

I see air-cooled Porsches everyday. There are a couple of long hoods and 3.2's that I see being used as daily commuters in my small town. I live on a popular driving route and every Saturday and Sunday there are tons of old Porsches seen driving down the road.

When I was living in ZH I would regularly see air cooled Porsches being driven around town. Sorry, I'm getting carried away with this post.

I used to live in Zurich ten years ago, and one of the photos you took was right in front of the Porsche Dealer I'd have my car serviced. Alex was the head mechanic, a real nice guy... If there are really so many air-cooled models around, will have to go up there again sometime...

Yea I would often walk by the dealership to see what's up (I used to live near the Rathaus).
I miss living there!

PS. If you really want to see a lot of aircooled Porsches, you should go to the Showtime in Interlaken on Aug. 16.
