So I finally went to register my car in Cali. Went for my smog check.. Failed..
Turns out, because I replaced the battery about 3 weeks ago, the cpu was somehow reset and the Cali board of smog and such didn't pass me. I haven't driven the car much in 3 weeks. Had some family emergencies to deal with.
The guy at the gas station said I needed to put on about 70 miles so the cpu can recompute. Looks like the Sunday drive is a great excuse for me to flush some of that carbon and get the girl humming again.
Unfortunately once the car passes I have to waste more time at the damn DMV..

Take a look in the archives (search "emissions" in title). I had a similar problem in GA after the state changed the machines used to test. The dealer "reprogramed" the ECU and reset all codes. Passed great next 2 times.

B-line,
I had the EXACT same problem in June. My battery was disconnected so they could do the wiring harness recall. My emissions part of the test passed w/o any problem, but I failed the Functional Check.
I ended up taking the car into Pacific Porsche (speak to Dominic) and they did a test on it (2 days, however) and ran it through the correct rpm cycles. After that test ($250), the car ECU codes were reset.
Beverly Hills Porsche does the same thing, but they haven't instilled a lot of confidence in me.

you got to be kidding me...
what a pain in the ***. 2 days and $250 to reset some codes. Well guess it's a good thing I have a couple weeks before school starts!
thanks guys..

You did not say what part of the smog test you failed. If it was the functional test, yes you just need to drive the car and the sysems will be set to ready. If you failed some aspect of the smog check, if it was close you probably want to run the crap out of it to get the cats real hot right before you take it back for a re-test....

Bob,
His ECU needs to be cycled a few times with some mileage put on it. That's normal for the ECU.
The ECU will report a "Not Ready" until it goes through enough cycles. I had the same thing happen to me at the Oregon DMV. Here, all they do is look at fault codes.

I just was going by the fact that he stated he replaced the battery and hasn't driven his car very much at all.... It rang a familiar bell ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Hey guys,
I passed the emissions allright. It had something to do with the cpu. I'm going on the SoCali drive tomorrow and I'm going to open her up. Hopefully Monday I'll pass the test. If that doesn't do the trick I'll bring her to Porsche for a cpu reset..
Have a great weekend.
