Winter Project Update (Clutch DIY)
It's been awhile since I posted my progress. Since my last update I've started to reassemble the motor. The following items have been completed:
Installed new DMF, Clutch & Pressure Plate
New Valve Cover Seals
New Chain Cover Seals
New RMS
New Spark Plug Wires & Plugs
New Power Steering Belt
New Oil Sending Unit
New Clutch Fork Shaft & Fork Bushings
New Slave Cylinder & Hose
New Check Valve
Fuel Injectors Professionally Cleaned
Still needing to be completed:
Install New Clutch Master Cylinder
Install New Oil, Air & Fuel Filters
Install New Bilstein HD Shocks & H&R Springs
Install New Engine Compartment Insulation
Reinstall Updated (filled bumperette holes) Rear Bumper
Install New Turbo Front Bumper
If the above wasn't enough I also purchased a new Gary Stratton Ducktail from a fellow Rennlist member. It may be awhile before I get it painted and installed.
I have to admit, most of my time has been spent cleaning various components.
I've gone ahead and attached a few photos.

I think the better question would be what didn't I use. No question, the cosmoline is tuff and takes allot of elbow grease to get off. But to answer your question, I used the following cleaners and I put them order in which they worked best:
Acetone
CRC Brake Cleaner (Walmart)
Contractors Spray Solvent, De-Sol-It (True Value)
Zep Fast 505 Degreaser (True Value)
Simple Green Automotive Cleaner (A&A Auto)
Citrus Cleaner, Purple Power (Walmart)
CRC QC-82 Pro Strength Degreaser (A&A Auto)
I'm going with the stock pad. I'm still debating on how I'm going to adhere it to the car. I'll most likely use a contact adhesive but I thinking maybe a high adhesion high temperature double-sided tape?

Wow, it's going to look and feel like a brand new car when all back together. So I take it that the CRC brake cleaner works really well. Do you need to rinse with water after degreasing with that?

Thanks for the complements.
I probably should have but I didn't. I just sprayed it on and scraped, brushed and rubbed until it came off. After using the brake cleaner I went over everything with the Contractors Spray Solvent, De-Sol-It cleaner. I wish I could say the cosmoline just melted away but it didn't, it's a real pain in the butt to get off.

zooming993,
I'm a little behind you in almost an exact project, which is taking way too long. Engine still on the stand, but putting parts back on now.
You sure set the bar high on a clean engine and engine bay...i am nowhere near that clean and I'm chomping at the bit to get the engine back in the car and drive it.
I also replaced the lifters. I was planning on going with Pss10's Coilovers. Any reason why you didn't go with them?

If you’re interested in fine tuning your suspension the PSS10’s are a great way to go. I installed a PSS10 kit on my M3 in 2008 but five plus years later it still set at the original settings, to be honest I never felt the need to change it. With this in mind I didn’t think it was worth spending the extra money on a coilover kit that I wouldn't use.

LSA Rear axle first on the 993 chassis...
Now that's how "its" done !
Looking at the 911s first multilink "LSA" rear axle reminds me its a thing of beauty.
OP: Good luck with that job, its a huge undertaking and to be taken on alone no less. Good luck!
I too use the Simple Green Automotive cleaner on the undercarriage with good results. Once a year or so and the wheel wells/chassis looks as good as new.
