993s and Porsche Salesmen
Perhaps a silly question, but I’m wondering how those who own a 993 (or any other older Porsche) have been treated when they’ve gone into a dealer to merely look at a new model. If the salesman knows what you own because he saw you drive in or you told him, have you experienced any condescension because you’re thought of as a purist who only appreciates our cars and are unlikely to be sold a new one?

It would be very short-sighted from a salesperson to treat you any differently whether you arrive in a 993 or anything else.
Yet I've experienced it first hand at one local Porsche dealership where I was met right away by an attentive salesperson when I showed up in my 997TT. Another time I came in the 993 and nobody ever approached me. Anecdotal evidence, I know...

One of the salesmen at our local dealer just bought a 993 for himself. It an RS replica that is really well done. He picked it up for a steal. When he showed it to me, I said that he could flip it and make $x0,000. He replied:"I will never sell this car."

Depends if you're wearing a cardigan or a Tag, for example.

My daughter went to the dealership to buy me a Christmas present. She was a bit intimidated when she walked in, but when she told the salesperson her dad had a 993, she was treated like royalty.
I remember when I bought my first car at Chick Iverson in Newport Beach,, a VW Rabbit Convertible, the salesmen told me about a guy who walked in in jeans and flip flops. None of the Porsche sales guys took notice. Since he was a VW sales guy, he helped him. Sold him a 911 within an hour. In sales, you can never judge a book by it's cover - especially today.

I used to go into Chick Iverson back in the day and drool over the Porsches. They had one of the first 914s in the showroom, but wouldn't even let me sit in it because it had been sold. So I bought mine from a dealer in Norwalk.

I usually frequent one if the Porsche dealerships in my area. I've only been in the sales room a few times and every time it's been dead. I mean, no one. No salesman or even a customer. Once I had to ask around for a salesman when I wanted to see when the new Boxster was coming in. He was pleasant and took my name down. Now, the service department is another story. They have repeatedly helped me and go out of their way and even mention they are very fond of the 993.

I think "it depends." I have been to dealerships and they have treated me well and I have been to others that I will not set foot in again - Napleton Porsche comes to mind. I have been there twice with my 993, once with a friend in his 996 GT3. Both times I was ignored. The second time the salesmen did not offer his hand, did not say hello, just kind of nodded in my direction when my friend introduced me. So, though I have had the worst car dealership experiences at Napleton, I would hesitate to go back to The Exchange.

Going to check out new Porsche models at my local dealer is never an issue no matter what I drive. The general manager knows who I am since we spend time on the track together.
I did get some very nice treatment from the Porsche service advisor recently when I took my Touareg in for an alignment after I replaced front control arms. He was excited having a V10 TDI in for service and had never seen one in person. I was flattered that somebody who deals with new Cayenne Turbos on a weekly basis was impressed with my 7+ year old VW.

In August, I went to the local BMW dealer in my 993 to pick up an oil filter for my X1. I came out and found a few salesmen congregating around my 993 looking in open windows. 993s might be no big deal at Porsche dealers but they can draw attention elsewhere.
