How do you know your engine mounts are bad?

Fluid leaking is the direct indication it's bad. There's no fluid from anything else in that area that would leak. When I first got my car and found fluid after I jacked it up I thought it was running out from puddling somewhere in the car. Found later that it only happened on same side and only when jacking. Went with solid mounts and have no complaints. NVH is not a factor. Even if it was, mechanical sounds don't bother me :-)

^^^ What exactly does this fluid look like? Is it very black, like old used oil? Or something else?
I get an occasional black dot or two on the floor that I just can't trace.

I like to think of it as "noise & vibration = harmonics" just like a guitar. That way I don't let the inherent mechanical sounds annoy me. When the windows start to fall out from vibration, then I know I've over done it. :-)

But his mounts are carrera 4 and there is no liquid in those, and they practically are endless.
So to the OP I would answer, NO , it's not your mounts that is making your gear pop out.
But with you gbx, need to check yours if you have a 993 2WD

Funny thing is that you revive a thread where (just saw it for first time) the OP starts asking if his mounts are dead.

The mounts on my old C4 were shot. I replaced them with blue wevos and the shifting was much smoother. Here's a shot of the old blown out motor mounts.

Yes, bad motor mounts can make gear pop. As the mounts age and sag, the motor falls down and stresses where the motor/tranny join. I replaced my mounts, got a GoldenRod, and replaced the tranny fluid and each step by itself helped gear pop. Doing all 3 things made it almost non-existent.

Yes. C4 mounts are supposed to be somewhere in between C2 mounts which are liquid filled and therefor softer and RS which are solid rubber and much firmer.
